I was dangerously close to generating content for this sub by commenting about Tuberculosis. Luckily a synapse in my smooth brain fired at the last second, and I remembered it’s caused by bacteria.

I love when my remaining two brain cells accidentally bump together.

I get the point he was trying to make, but he's wrong.

If a virus kills it's host REALLY QUICKLY, then it can't spread very far, no matter if it's highly infectitous. It's likely why diseases like Ebola never went worldwide. But a virus that is very infectious but doesn't kill it's host for many weeks, can easily spread.

30
graven_raven•

Yea thats what i came to say. He just didn't realize it can still be deadly but take a.long time to kill the host, allowing for the infection to spread to other hosts

18
gerkletoss•

Ebola also doesn't transmit as easily as people think. A sewer system alone would prevent serious outbreaks, as people would be much less likely to come into contact with the body fluids of infected people.

4
eamonnanchnoic•

Yeah.

I remember seeing a report from Monrovia, Liberia in a slum area in the street during the large outbreak there.

No sanitation, effluent on the streets, ridiculously high population density.

The reasons viruses lke Ebola spread is less to do with its innate transmissibility and much more due to virus' exploiting things like already barely functioning sanitation.

1
eamonnanchnoic•

Yeah, natural selection doesn't really "see" the virus' virulence as by the time people are sick transmission is already dropping.

In a sense transmission is decoupled from virulence. With Ebola, on the other had, transmission is limited by its virulence.

1
Giggibeerbelly•

It makes sense under an overall evolutionary perspective but it takes many generations for pathogen virulence to decrease and co-evolve with its host. If we wait for this, it would mean millions more preventable deaths.

9
Ray-Misuto•

He was talking about covid-19, there is no evolutionary aspect.

0
Giggibeerbelly•

What do you mean? His point is nonsense in this scenario but it doesn't mean Covid-19 is not mutating.

2
Ray-Misuto•

Covid-19 is a man-made bio weapon, there's no telling how it will act, we've never really had one before, on this level anyway

-2
Giggibeerbelly•

Ohh. I see where we are going. I also enjoy spy movies but you should give them a break some time.

3
BetterKev•

That sub feels like cheating.

7
cube-drone•

they named themselves "noNewNormal" because "confidentlyIncorrect" was already taken by this sub

9
BQDKNY•

They are kind of correct. Generally, the deadlier a virus, the quicker a host dies, thus limiting the available time for host to pass on. However, that's not to say a virus can't come along which is more deadly, while taking it's time to kill host, thus allowing more time to pass along.

6
Kilahti•

Covid isn't particularly deadly. A lot deadlier than regular flu of course and not a laughing matter since the side effects can linger months or years apparently.

...but no one is arguing that this is a massive killer so that just seems like a strawman.

3
Ray-Misuto•

It becomes a relatively useless statement as well since he's talking about a bio-weapon and not a naturally occurring virus, as a bioweapon it can do about anything because it's not held to the laws of nature.

I could literally act like one of the meta viruses in Plague Inc., do absolutely nothing till it infects everyone and then instantly kill everyone, we're just lucky the people who were running the project didn't seem to have malice as their primary goal.

bluebunny0•

How did that shit get 10 upvotes.

3
Ray-Misuto•

Other than political crazies who would worry about downvoting what he said, it's a simple statement of scientific actuality and why it affects his personal choice.

It'd be like downvoting someone who says they're not going to use sunscreen because they're staying inside all day.

Anyone who keeps doing the same thing as him will upload it and there's no reason to downvote it.

0
bluebunny0•

No, im worried because idiots like him are spreading misinformation that makes people not take the vaccine, which is why a former Cancer patient like me cant go outside without worrying for his life. so no, its not like not putting on sunscreen.

Wait a minute… elsewhere in another thread on this post you confidently, incorrectly, said that there is no evolutionary aspect because COVID-19 is a bio weapon. Now it is evolving?

Actually and especially in the case of covid-19, life is like Plague Inc.

Viruses that are extremely deadly will get cures very very quickly to the point that the cure will outpace infection ratio, meanwhile if a virus is extremely contagious it will also call in a cure before it can become something deadly as humans fear something benign becoming deadly.

This is why we really haven't faced any serious challenges from natural viruses, even back before medical science we simply lock the virus up somewhere and wait for it to die off without hosts.

It's what makes a bio-weapon like covid-19 such a dangerous thing, the people who created it could literally plague inc. it into something that keeps getting worse no matter what the researchers inventing a cure do about it.

Big Hoss is going to be Big Loss if you don’t get out of here with that boschitt

Getting any sickness is like rolling a D100 where anything above 80 is death. You don’t want to roll that die more than you need to.

2
Ray-Misuto•

I've yet to hear of anyone dying from the common cold, yet it is is a Coronavirus that people don't even bother taking the day off when they get it.

So it's closer to Rolling a D4 when a five or higher will kill you.

Vaccines are a lot like babies, some of them people want and others get aborted, in the end you just have to remember the slogan my body my choice and it will make sure that you're not the retarded zealot trying to force people into things.

Comparing covid-19 to the smallpox has a lot like comparing a campfire to a supernova.

Relatively poor argument if he's trying to convince someone the vaccine is useful.

Much better argument was that EU commercial about the phalanx, the non-vaccinated portion of it buckled to the assault of the virus and the whole unit was wiped out, at least it's a fair argument.

In the end everybody just shouldn't worry about it, but a good alternative if people just don't want to live and let live is to simply move the people who insist on vaccinations to a new location off of Earth, as the people who didn't give a fuck about vaccinations were here first.

Says the super intelligent person who didn't respond to anything said.

Let's hear what you have to say about any of it, if the best you could do is just say you're stupid because I disagree with you, hate to tell you man but you probably are the stupidest person in the room and everybody else didn't move closer to you.

Let's hear it,

The reason you think covid-19 is worse than smallpox is because....?

The reason you think that the phalanx commercial was a poor argument is?

The reason you think that a group entering into another groups home and demanding that they do something is good because?

I look forward to seeing the answers you have.

Tell that to Ebola.

-1
Lasket•

If the virus doesn't kill in a short amount of time, it can still be deadly and infectious.

2
Ray-Misuto•

You've obviously never played Plague Inc., any virus that doesn't kill in a short amount of time will be cured 🤣
