He was a kind man, but never spoke of his time in the Air Force. He was the only pilot with a credited kill during the skirmishes, one of the deadliest in 53 years. in 1984 he shot down an airliner that would not respond to radio contact, 237 dead. He regrets what he did that day and he says he will never forgive himself.
