Cat litter problems - wood pellets

Litterbox Habits

Hello,

I have a small kitten - 3,5 months. She uses litter just fine and I used sillicone litter for 2 weeks because that's what breeder used.

Now then... my cat REFUSES to go into the sillicone litter after 2 days and pees outside looking into my eyes deeply, clearly sending me signals to exchange the whole litter, so that's what I do... I can't really scoop out pee as it's non clumping, just poop, so I need to replace the whole thing every 2 days - on the box it says it should last waaay longer, but tbh I'm not surprised at my cat behaviour... The yellow wettish litter at the bottom is quite disgusting :P No wonder she doesn't like to touch it.

So I researched and read that it's not that safe to use clumping litter with kitten that small and the only available non clumping litter besides sillicate I found near me is wood pellets.

I bought the sifting litter box and wood pellets. I read pellets will turn to dust when wet and just sift through to the drawer at the bottom. She used the pine litter as fast as I placed it down and peed into it. Now the problems I faced are:

  1. My kitten tries to eat the wood pellets... I'm not sure how safe it is and how do I teach her to not do that? Maybe I should just throw away this litter? Why would a cat try to eat wood pellets is beyond me.
  2. It seems the pee just flies through the pellets and what lands in the drawer is a little bit of dust and quite a big portion of urine. Is that how it's supposed to be? I imagined there to be mainly dust + maybe some wet spots, but after one pee its like 90% of the pee fluid content is in the bottom drawer. I put like good half of my finger litter into the box , like 4-5cm. Am I doing something incorrectly? I used Cat's Best Universal Litter as it seems the best reviewed one of the avaiable ones in my country.

Thanks for reading through. I am hoping there is someone here who can answer my questions :)

  1. One of my cats also initially tried to eat the pellets but he gave up fast (although he was a little older than yours). She'll probably poop it out or throw it up. If it's made correctly (kiln dried to remove oils) it shouldn't be toxic.

  2. I also initially had this problem, after some use there's enough sawdust that it doesn't pool but the dust at the bottom would be very soggy. What worked for me was putting a thin layer of pellets (like 1-2 pellets thick) in the bottom tray to absorb the initial pee after a litter box change and my problem was solved, no pooling or soggy clumps of sawdust. You could also line the bottom with an absorbent puppy pad but that's just one more thing to buy so I don't do that.

I use pine pellets for 3 cats. Use a plain litter box and LOTS of pellets. 3 inches deep. Sounds to me like you don't have enough in the box.

3 inches is the length of about 0.07 'Ford F-150 Custom Fit Front FloorLiners' lined up next to each other

Thanks. I'll try to pour more into the box. Maybe thats the reason urine goes through just like that, but on the other hand I had same amount of Silicate and it was fine, had no idea it's supposed to be more.

Is the sawdust at the bottom supposed to be wettish, or mainly just dust?

My ferret uses pellet litter. When she pees just once. The saw dust is only dry. But when she has peed in the same spot the sawdust gets a bit soggy.

I used it for my cat as well before. And I never had issues with soggy sawdust with her. I don't have the sifting box though, don't know if that makes a difference?

I would use about 10 cm of litter in the box. More if the cat enjoys to dig😁

I think that made the difference cause it just went through pellets and remained as fluid in the drawer. I have 7 cm of pellets now and like 50%+ of pee turns to sawdust. I also put some pellets in the drawer and they absorb the urine that manages to fall down so for now it seems to be working.

Thanks for advice :)

This might be a bit late but what we do with our cats is the same as you and the sieve tray and wood pellets.

Firstly the pellets are non toxic and kittens are safe to chew on them.

We put an incontinence sheet in the bottom tray, this absorbs the urine like a baby's nappy. It helps with the smell too. Cleaning up is much easier too.
