fox and worldstarhiphop. there's a great combination of sources
I find that I've disassociated local fox from THE FOX.
I agree. My favorite local news reporting station is Fox. The same guy who did this report is always pretty good at his job!
Holy fuck. Thats my fucking house. How did I miss this?
Being a cop in Philadelphia is probably THE worst customer service job you could have in this city. I've lived here all my life and have seen it go both ways where there is a bust of a group of corrupt cops to where people just don't show any respect for the same officiers they will call when they need help.
With the rash of unprovoked beatings in the city I have no problems with these cops waving their guns around these scumbags. I also find it great that someone would upload a video of someone attacking a cop usually people only like to upload videos of when cops are doing something wrong.
Honestly this city seems to be heading to the pitch where some teens will start a unprovoked attack with a random stranger who will happen to have a gun and shoot them. I can already see the lash back on both sides and it will probably be ugly. Honestly I wouldn't mind seeing more scumbags being shot by police and citizens alike. Does that make a bad person?
Love the last line of the report, "Some think this is an example of the going crime problem." As to suggest there are some people who do not.
Im a philly cop, and this really is just a normal day on the job. Had almost the same thing happen to me earlier today. Shitty reality in this city.
the world would be a better place with a pig like you snuffed out of it
Fox news really went out on a limb interviewing the FOP for this piece. Gee, I wonder what he's going to say?
in the first take, confused, he just ordered a cheese burger.
So free publicity for some shitty web site that probably condones this crap.
Can't watch video on iPhone but let me go out on a limb here and assume these guys were black. No?

you think this is something new? this shit happens thousand times a day, listen to a police scanner, there is a lot of shit that the news doesnt report. should the cops really be nice when they always have to worry about getting killed? i think if you are nice or give any potential criminal any slack they will just use it against you. im not saying that they have the right to abuse their powers but this is a classic example of treat someone how you would want to be treated. its a fucking shame that these idiots think they could just attack ANYONE like that, then they end up getting shot and everyone hates the police for it.
should the cops really be nice
Yes.
yeah be a cop in the ghetto and see how that fucking works. maybe in the suburbs
I didn't choose that job for a reason. If you don't have the capacity to be nice to everyone, and assume everyones innocence, you shouldn't be out there.
I did not see any men "punch out" any cops.
I would have been fine with the cop shooting both of those savages. Two less morons ruining the city. Only 700,000 more to go.
Agreed. Wouldn't have lost a moment of sleep if the cop emptied a clip into one of them. When you have an infestation, you exterminate.
Mr. Hargis? Is that you?
Fucking racist. You should shoot yourself, dick hole.
I call savages beating cops savages and you immediately assume it's because they're black. You're a piece of shit ridden with white guilt.

Fuck PBR.
and new jersey
Dude no way. Fuck Theo.
this freaking guy.....
reminds me of watching the sopranos on A&E
Hey, we agree on something! Cool!
I am trying to be as objective as I can when I say this: the officer was not at all out of line in drawing his weapon. To the woman is saying "he didn't do nothing" - I'm pretty sure punching and tackling a cop is not nothing.
It pisses me off when people complain about Philly PD (Temple PD are Philly cops, as are Drexel and UPenn police). They have to deal with so much shit that the average Philadelphia resident will never see. It's pretty understandable and totally reasonable if a cop has a chip on his or her shoulder.
I actually thought she was talking about the guy they were initially trying to arrest, and since they don't show the initial exchange, we don't really know why this person was being arrested. We're kind of just expected to believe that the police officers were in the right because "Philly crime." It sounds like they ran into the guy with their bike, got a "fuck the police" or two, and decided to arrest the guy for... something? He ended up getting charged with assault, but the assault came as they were trying to arrest him, so I'm not sure what the initial problem was.
Understandable, but not acceptable. It's literally in the job description not to have a chip on your shoulder ("Courtesy, Professionalism, Respect"). I don't know how you can expect to effectively police a community that you're in a cycle of resentment with. I'm not sure how we solve that problem (I like the idea of foot patrols, though the city probably doesn't have the money), but it's definitely a problem.
All that said, I don't really see much evidence that the cops did have an axe to grind, and I do think that the officer was in justifiable fear for his safety, so drawing his weapon was probably the right move. It seemed to do more to defuse the situation than escalate it.
COIN is the answer. Do the same as we did in Baghdad. Have small groups of police live in micro police stations in Philly's rougher areas. Have them do multiple daily foot patrols so they start to get to know the people in the area. Letting cops role through these neighborhoods in their cruisers just alienates the police from the people. It may be expensive, but I'm sure we could find the money if we decided we needed it.
In NYC this was a huge part of the plan the clean up the streets. They would assign patrol cops to walk or bike(not drive) the same neighborhoods everyday. By looking at the evidence in how much better New York has gotten since the 80s and 90s, it looks like there's merit to this idea even outside the warzone.
This was a really constructive comment, thanks!
I agree that we could probably find the money if there was some guarantee it'd work, crime is a huge political priority in this town, but there's also the bureaucratic inertia to deal with. When you do things a certain way for 30 years, you start to hire people who are suited to or enjoy that way of doing things, and those people are resistant to the kind of fundamental change in policing we're talking about.
The video said the cops were just questioning the guy when it turned physical. Nothing wrong with asking a few questions, and why would you ever escalate anything with police? They have guns and can legally kill you with them.
North Philly has a lot of children walking masquerading as adults. I used to work "in the community" up there and there are a lot of great human beings in the neighborhood--unfortunately there are also a lot of people that don't think blatant lying, playing a victim, or assaulting innocent people doing their job is wrong or bad.
I certainly would not want to be a Philly cop or a Philly school teacher.
We were just giving a round of applause to a guy who shot two people, killing one, when three of them were beating him unarmed.
It would be completely biased and ignorant to a cop's situation to not give them the same opportunity to even draw a weapon in self-defense. They have that right. Especially when the surrounding public seems to be turning on them, they need to regain order by force.
They were protecting themselves. For anyone but a cop, that is such a completely justified use of a weapon that few do anything but celebrate it. It's good that we hold cops to higher standards of reasonable force than a citizen, and these didn't fire upon their assailants like the recent 65-year old victim, so that seems to be satisfactory.
