Is this its own device? Because it seems like a Universal Remote app for an iOS device would do the trick.

A remote needs to be something you don't need to unlock like iOS. I've tried using my iPhone/iPad to control my TV (I use Plex), and it was a pain in the ass. Pick up phone, swipe to unlock, launch app, connect, perform action. With the Apple remote on the table I can just pick it up and press a button.

They could put some kind of touch sensor on the back of the thing so as you pick it up the screen comes on and you can just to stuff as fast as you would on a traditional remote.

In college we had a remote that turned on when you picked it up. It used some sort of motion sensor to turn on. However, there was a little motor in it that would slightly vibrate it on a wooden table and keep it awake... that would kill the battery. You always had to set it on the couch.

You'd still need an IR or RF interface depending on how the A/V devices are controlled.

Some other technology like Bonjour could work too.

If your other devices are on the wifi network, maybe.

Very likely if it's a device in my home.

One feature an Apple/iOS remote needs is "find my iremote".

I would absolutely love if apple would make a universal remote. I have quite a few devices and a Harmony remote currently. While I love the harmony in comparison to using several other remotes, it's still pretty bad and Logitech really doesn't seem to know how to improve it.

For the last 10 years or more I've owned a Sony universal remote, lit touch screen, easy to program and controls a ton of devices with changeable button labels. (Not made anymore) I'm sure Apple will come up with something utilizing today's multi-touch technology but the problem and basic idea is far from something new.

The problem and basic idea of the smart phone and tablet was far from new as well.
