Favorite industrial/DIN mount switches?

Switching

I've got a project coming up where I'll need some industrial switches that I can mount in controls cabs for a customer. Specs wise, within the cab there is 12vAC, 24vDC and 24vAC available for power, I'll need at least 4 (but preferably more) RJ45 ports and two SFP cages & VLAN support.

I've been looking at Phoenix Contact & Moxa switches, but I thought I'd reach out to the hivemind and see what it had to say.

3400 series running ios-xe is the one to get

We use Cisco's IE line pretty extensively, we like them quite a bit.

Keep in mind that the 1000 series do not run IOS though. Everything else does.

Cisco if you have the money or need advanced features. For simpler or more cost sensitive installs we use Moxa - good value and good reliability.

I avoid Advantech.

Alen Bradley Stratix 5700 (link). They are basically Cisco Catalyst switches put in an industrial box. They have full management and come in multiple sizes for the number for ports and SFP connections you need.

edit. added link.

I don't know if my VARs can sell me those, but I'll certainly add 'em to the list. Looks like they're based off Cisco's IE series switches which're far and away the favorite it would appear.

You have to go through an AB (Alen Bradley) distributor to get them (I used to work as a Control Systems Integrator and used them all the time in Industrial Control Systems). If you have a control systems group or someone who is works on your industrial panels ask them they may be able to get you one or get you connected to a supplier for AB parts.

One of my other customers does controls & automation, I'll see if they can hook me up with a supplier. Thanks!

Cisco seems to be most popular.

Planet cheapest

Moxa and allied tellesis are well regarded

Siemens RuggedCom…… I switched over from a mix of Moxa/Cisco and so far been very happy. What you are looking for would be like the Siemens XC206

As mentioned the Cisco IE are good, I have used them. Rockwell also rebrand them and put a custom (ish) IOS on there and they are well regarded in the industrial sector.

Am i the only one that is forced to buy Rockwell's Stratix line? essentially Cisco's IE series with a rockwell face plate and price tag :(

Unless you're actually using FactoryTalk to configure the switches, just get the IE line. There's zero difference between the two aside from that integration.

Not too bad. Free updates. Q-in-Q out of the box. No licensing. Can't really comment on support. They have a 10g version.

N-tron is an option. Used a long time ago, worked well.

Siemens Scalance or Ruggedcom?

We have 8 Cisco IE4000 out in the field inside a stainless Hoffman box with no climate controls. Powered from 24 VDC. No issues. 12 ports with SFP and PoE.

Seems like a lot of people like the Cisco IE series. I'll have to give them a look-see.

They also have dual power rails. Forgot to mention that...

Oooh that will make the controls guys happy.

Not DIN, but I have a few IE5000 switches in some fiber cabinets. Dual power, temperature hardened, mix of fiber and copper. It's a solid platform.

What amazes me about the ie switches is the mtbf. Cisco claims 40 something years. Remarkable if true.

2
SandyTechOP•

I'll say this for Cisco, they can turn out some quality hardware that just kinda seems to truck along. So it wouldn't surprise me if they did have switches that lasted that long. I've got ones in service that are over a quarter of the way there as it is...

We’ve been running Moxa 905g switches for basic layer 2 switching and they’ve been pretty solid, albeit a basic managed layer 2 switch. Handles a couple hundred mbps of radar video without much complaint.

Transition Networks units almost meet those requirements, but they need 48VDC in, I believe. Still, two SFP cages and 6-8 ports (depending on model) with POE out on 4 of them.

Cisco IE is an obvious option, if you find IOS and the brand worth the premium. Plenty of other options already mentioned. I have not seen anyone mention Korenix yet.
