Cheap Dunedin GPs

Advice Request

Kia ora, i have a few health problems which should be seen by a gp. Which practices are affordable? (Ideally I want to spend $50, i have a csc since I was a student last semester if that helps). I live right in centre city w/o a car so please don't recommend anywhere 5km from the octagon please.

Thanks 😊

Te Kaika in Caversham are for lower income people, they also have various other services (mental health, dental etc) available. You can catch the 33 bus from the bus hub which drops you pretty much outside and if back on it returning to town within 30mins it's a free transfer.

Yep te kaika is the best value. Also does dental and has a community gym.

also the 5/6 bus, and 50 bus, all within a close radius, and others with a bit more of a walk.

You can see a doctor for free on tuesdays by booking an appointment at the needle exchange.

Also pretty much any doctor should be under $50 if you have a community services card.

I have a community services card fortunately. Last time I saw a gp i stupidly followed my ex flatmates advice and went to urgent doctors and spent $80. I just know being unregistered means gp visits can cost more money

So register? Surely worth it if you plan to visit more than once. And yeah, seeing the urgent doctor for non-urgent things will be expencive.

Needle exchange doc is completly free, no signup. (You don't have to be a needle user for this, they see anyone)

I had an urgent medical problem (enough to be sent to the hospital the next day) that time. Can i register online?

Your best bet is to

  1. Compile a list of the GPs in Dunedin that you're within distance of
  2. Add all the other ones too
  3. Ring around asking to be added. Expect many to be not taking new registrations but keep at it - having a GP is important for your health as you have discovered.

You don't need to register for the needle exchange doc. just ring up and ask for an appoinment.

Usually at a regular GP you just book an appointment and ask to register at the same time, They will give you the paperwork to fill out when you go in for appointment.

Yes, urgent doctors will always cost more. A normal GP visit at pretty much any GP in Dunedin is below $50. Your first visit to register with the GP may cost more but every standard consult after that would be normal price.

I go to Dunedin North Medical Centre and it's around $40-45 without a community services card. I've been there for four years and I've had no problems. Their website says that they don't currently have capacity for new patients but to ring WellSouth Enrollment Support on 0800 478 256 to get help getting enrolled anywhere. Dunedin GPs are generally cheaper than the national average and having a community services card will help you get it cheaper. I don't think it matters where you go, just that you get enrolled somewhere (that you can easily get to).

It's really shit that most practices don't have capacity for new patients. When I first joined my GP practice I didn't get my choice of doctor but at least I could choose a practice that was a convenient location.

Broadway Medical Center is nice and central. Think it's $48 without a CS card.

Mornington health center has a free shuttle service and with a community services card it costs me I think $20 a visit.
