[4064] Mirror in the Dark

Hello again. I got excellent feedback for my last submission. I've decided to table it for now.
New submission: the first half of the first chapter of a book I've been trying to write since 2010 (no joke). The whole chapter is on the long side, so part 1 is presented here. The title is a working title. It's long, I know, but I hope it reads quickly (and folks will tell me if it doesn't).
My MC is a woman named Jude; this first chapter takes place when she's six years old. The rest of the book will be in the present.
I've actually got this book plotted out and about 1/3 of it written. I abandoned it a while back to try some new things, but I can't seem to quit the thing.
I'd like general thoughts on the tone, the entertainment value, and the characterization as well as any other comments people have. I suppose the genre is something like dark fantasy or a horror fairy tale, but it's not straight horror, so I'm not sure what to call it.
