Suggestions for a week around SLC in October?

Travel Advice

I will be attending a midweek conference in SLC this October and have decided to bring my wife and make it a week-long trip (arriving on a Friday and leaving the evening on the second Saturday (8 days later).

We can see the city stuff during the midweek, but I have two and half days on either end and would like to enjoy some Utah scenery and nature. In particular, I'd love to see some western wildlife (antelopes, bison, Bigfoot, etc.).

My wife does not want to spend too much time on the road, so I am looking for destinations we could visit within two or three hours from the city. Antelope Island looks like a possibility, but I am not sure what else to look into. (There are many options of course, but I am not sure which ones to prioritize).

Any suggestions would be most welcomed!

  1. Spend an afternoon in Park City
  2. Oktoberfest runs through October 17 in Snowbird. It is a nice way to spend an afternoon, and can plan several hikes around the area for the rest of the day. Take the tram to 11k+ feet.
  3. Plan some hikes in the Cottonwood Canyons. Lake Blanche is medium-difficulty and hits a variety of views. I have seen moose on that trail. Possibly also bigfoot.
  4. Drive down to and through the Aspen Grove, make a couple of stops and hike, possibly check out Sundance Resort later that day, then stop in Provo for dinner at Navajo Hogan before you drive back up.

Thank you! Great ideas.

Is it worth getting a place somewhere outside Park City or Snowbird as a base for a few days? Is there a nice old inn or lodge somewhere with a bit of character?

If you have a car, snowbird is a relatively quick drive from SLC. Same for Park City, depending on where you are staying in the city. Check out the resorts in the PC area, and check out airbnb for unique stays as well.

There is also the town of Midway which just west of Heber City. It's got allot of character born of it's swiss roots. Although it's a little more discovered now.

Do you like fall colors? Take big cottonwood canyon up to guardsman's pass. It's pretty amazing. There are some large Aspen groves up there that might be on full display by then. The sea of yellow leaves and white trunks is only broken by the occasional flame red maple or grey slab of granite out-cropping.
