Saints traded McEvoy to HAW - Who won this trade?

During the 2013 trade period McEvoy was traded to the Hawks from the Saints. The Saints received Shange Savage and a first round draft pick, which became pick 18. Pick 18 was used on Luke Dunstan.

HAW: McEvoy has gone on to play 153 games, kicked 73 goals, 2 x Premiership player, 17 Brownlow votes and current club Captain.

StK: Savage played 109 games and although finding a home as a defender was traded initially as a forward who kicked 26 goals, 13 in his first 2 seasons.

Dunstan has played 104 games, Rising Star nomination and is likely to be finishing up with the Saints this year.

I'd previously looked at this trade and thought it was pretty even, today I'm sitting back thinking HAW have walked away with the chocolates. Thoughts?

Hawks won comfortably. Dunstan didn't become the player some thought that he could. Savage was a low-medium impact player. McEvoy has become a club stalwart for the Hawks.

His first season was outstanding but couldn't seem to keep up the momentum.

Even in 2013, Hawthorn won the trade.

I remember lying in bed listening to SEN thinking wtf, we (and we still do) need a ruckman and since when was McEvoy not only on the table but all the saints wanted was steak knives? Fuck Hawthorn for taking him ;)

I was livid, LIVID

Pick 18 was still pretty good value given the Saints were looking to rebuild and didn't have much in the way of trade value in players at the time.

I thought it was a terrible trade at the time. I cant remember the specifics of why, but players like McEvoy, a genuine dual position player (key forward/ruckman), aren't very common. Players like Savage are common and average, and a pick 18 is starting to get to speculation territory. 104 games is a decent result from that pick but that and savage are not equivalent

Hawthorn easily

Wouldn't be the length of the Flemington straight but they've definitely won.

You're right, it wouldn't be. Hawthorn won that by the length of the Nullarbor.

Pretty sure McEvoy won that trade.

It’s not even a question is it?

It was a crazy deal at the time and the Hawks have only gone further and further in front since.

Lmao one is a 2x premiership player and current captain and the other 2 don’t even play for the Saints anymore with Dunstan being delisted .. how is this even a question

Oh us for sure. Reliable Ruck who can swing forward sang a big goal while being a reliable goal kicker and leader. I liked savage especially with his first few seasons with us just didn’t have the full potential. He seemed ok at saints but again couldn’t just make that extra step

I remember thinking Hawthorn fleeced St Kilda at the time and it really panned out that way.

I was so annoyed that they'd gotten an elite ruckman for so little.

Hawthorn big time. It's only been in the last couple of years that St Kilda have filled the massive hole in the ruck left by McEvoy's departure, meanwhile McEvoy is a dual premiership player and club captain. Savage was meh and Dunstan never grew beyond his first season.

What? McEvoy didn't leave a massive hole in at St Kilda. He was an okay ruckman. He was good around the ground but ultimately average in the middle. Hickey had been brought in the previous year and they secured Billy longer the same period McEvoy was traded. Both Hickey and Longer had really good years at St Kilda. Fuck, Longer would probably still be at the club is he hadn't had concussion issues.

Not sure why you're getting downvoted. At the time I don't think Ben was as well viewed as he is today.
The Saints had just picked up Hickey and Longer, had a new rising star in Dunstan (at the time) and were able to ease their cap pressure. Seemed like a good move to me, but hindsight is 20/20.

I think people are sleeping on Hickey and Longer.

Hickey went hard in 2016 (averaging 3 marks, 3 tackles, 28 H/O and 3.6 clearances) and Longer went hard in 2017 (averaging 38 H/O, 4 tackles, 2.6 clearances) the two years we were percentage or a win off making finals. Both massively different players, but both had fantastic years that were better than Ben's best at St Kilda. Longer also played the majority of 2014 and 2015 and had great years considering he was 21 and we were bottoming out.

2018 is really the only year the club has a hole in the ruck area with injuries. But the footy gods looked upon us with pitty and gifted the club with Footy Jesus himself, Rowan Marshall

Well at the Time of the McEvoy trade Longer had just requested a trade to Hawthorn publicly.

Billy Longer requested a trade to Hawthorn that trade period, with Hawthorn also expected to chase Mumford.

Buddy ended up at Sydney so GWS had extra cap and got Mumford instead, Savage wanted to go to stkilda and they just offered McEvoy, hawthorn couldn't beleive it and McEvoy got the call on holiday asking if he wanted to join the reigning premiers.

Longer didn't want to go to Hawthorn now that McEvoy was there cause he thought he'd get number 1 ruck but we always planned on Longer + Mumford as Bailey was retiring and Hale with only 2 years left.

It was a win at the time and it turned out to be an even bigger win then that. Savage and Dunstan were alright but McEvoy has been a rock for Hawthorn in the ruck

One of the strangest trades I remember.

kiss_my_whatHawthorn•

I remember sitting in an Aussie themed bar in Thailand in 2013 watching McEvoy clunk everything in sight against Carlton(?), listening to BT going off his tits about "Big Boy" and thinking how he'd be the one to take StK all the way in the next few years.

Nek minnit big Max retires, we're hard up for a decent ruck to go with Hale and only have give up Savage and a pick to grab StK's best prospect for the future.

McEvoy was exactly what we needed at the end of 2013, without him (and Lake) there is no 2014 and 2015 GF wins.

As part of this deal we also got pick 18 (Blake Acres) for picks 24 (Billy Hartung) and 59 (Ceglar Rookie elevation)

Pick 18 was the Franklin compensation and wasn't included in the first deal because it hadn't been announced yet.

PointOfFingersSt Kilda '66•

The real winners were all the clubs waiting to have their first 2007 draft pick after St Kilda. Because after the Saints took McEvoy at pick 9 the next few picks included Dangerfield, Ebert, Cyril Rioli, Harry Taylor and Alex Rance. You can usually get ruckmen at the trade table - a lot of second in line ruckmen are looking to move.

2
JayJayBnSt Kilda•

We also traded pick 13 for Tom Hickey in 2012. Grundy was taken at 18.

Hopefully the club never drafts a ruckman again and just clones Marshall for eternity

karma_dumpsterHawthorn '71•

I think people saying it was a clear Haw win at the time are being a bit revisionist.

StK needed to rebuild and a high draft pick plus Savage I thought was a good deal for them. I thought it was risky and maybe we slightly overpaid.

In hindsight, yeah, Hawthorn wins.
