Dreaming of ice

Every night this week

I’ve driven an hour west

To Utah

To park in the desert

And assemble my secondhand telescope

To peer through the space between us.

To marvel at the sunlight

Reflected off your cool face

You peer back at me.

\\

There is water in you,

I know this.

All that light must be ice.

\\

When the stars shift

And the nocturnal lizards scurry back to their caves

I pack up my scope

And its lenses

I am careful to put them back in place

In their padded box

Which is all black under my nighttime hands

And soft like the space between us.

\\

It snows next week

and

My boots crunch through the wet white drifts

Cool sunlight reflects off my face.

I dream that I have cut

Through the soft distance

As a blade through water.

You could have been my home

Stinging blue-cold on my lips

Numbing my hands

Crushed under my boots

I love you

Distant, icy planet.

Oh, hi there; didn't see you! You've reached r/OCPoetry. This is a workshop site where you can share, read, and talk about eachother's poetry & etc. To post your own poems, you need to give feedback to 2 other writers. If you aren't trying to share, you're encouraged to give feedback, but aren't required. Try to be nice, questioning, and specific. If you can't do that - eat a cabbage and come back later. Try to give feedback to a writer without any feedback. Lastly, read our feedback guide , other writer's comments, or this author’s feedback links. If you still aren't sure whether your comments are useful ‘feedback’, or you have any other questions, send us a modmail!

This is a really smart poem. I like how you used the telescope to direct the reader to the next subject- the telescope, in this way, shoes the view of the speaker, what is on their mind. Initially, it is to peer at the other person. When the speaker is putting the telescope away, they notice the box it is in is "soft like the space between us"- i feel like you could find another word instead of soft, as it does confuse me- how is the space between them soft? Just a thought.

I like the enjambment throughout. You separate the lines perfectly, not too long or short. Great poem.
