[TINYEFFORT] Ableism 101
Because of the lengthy discussions SRSD has been having about ableism within the past few days, I figured it would be an appropriate time to put together a tiny effort post (be kind--it's my first!). I've seen a lot of subtle ableism and ablesplaining creeping into SRS, especially during conversations about ableism itself.
Ableism is most commonly defined as: "discrimination or prejudice against individuals with disabilities". But of course, like all forms of prejudice, it cannot be distilled into a neat little dictionary definition. Able-bodied privilege and ableism run deep throughout society and ableism can take many, many forms.
I'm not always great with words, so I put together a list of resources and links. (I strongly suggest you check out the Able Bodied Privilege Checklist, by the way.)
