My landlord didn't notify me of a rent increase at all (!!??), what are my next steps?
Hey r/SaintJohnNB,
The state of Canadian housing at the moment (here's to hoping its a temporary thing) is unforgivably insane and rent increases (of gargantuan proportions) have been commonplace here in Saint John recently.
It's time for the annual rent increase and I was expecting a letter some time ago for an increase (2 months' notice, as I'm on a "periodic tenancy", I believe). New year with the same landlord and, boy, am I glad to not get a letter given how horrific housing has been. New month's rent withdrawn from my account, et voila: an approximate 3.5% increase has taken place, with ZERO notification. The year prior was approximately 4.5% increase, with a notification.
Is my understanding of the "notifications" from the Residential Tenancies Act just straight up screwed or is there an explicit threshold in percent increase (i.e 3.5%) which requires a landlord to notify?
TYIA!
