Why does Tingley still have any legitimate certifications? The professional group certifying LMFTs (which apparently is his training—he’s described as a “marriage and family therapist” in this article) surely they don’t condone conversion therapy?
What body is granting this man professional certifications?
What body is granting this man professional certifications?
Great question there. Frankly I wouldn't even be surprised if his qualifications are outright fabricated given the type of sleazy scummy individual he is.
As far as I understand, accrediting bodies are required to investigate if patient complain in writing to them about a mental health care provider whom they’ve accredited , LMFT, LCSW, psychologist, etc all have this set up. The provider is also supposed to be licensed with state in which they practice and this should be in a searchable state govt database.
I’m not sure what if any penalties are there if someone isn’t licensed and accredited. I bet insurance won’t cover the cost of the care they provide. I wonder if most of Tingley’s patients (or their parents more accurately) pay out of pocket.
There generally aren't any penalties for being unlicensed (some states require even unlicensed people to "register"), but you cannot use a protected title -- typically this covers physicians, psychologists, social workers, professional counselors, and marriage and family therapists (MFTs). "Therapist" is rarely protected. And you are absolutely right, insurance rarely covers unlicensed people.
I tried to look up his licensure in the state of WA database, but for some reason, it requires a captcha code that it insists I'm getting wrong.

The code of ethics states they do not discriminate on basis of sexual orientation. That suggests they would be opposed to the use of conversion therapy. The first result I got googling his name had the credentials LMFT but the rest of the listings lacked those letters.
ETA you got further than I did—I couldn’t even find the site to search the database lol

“Tingley, who filed his lawsuit in May, is represented by the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), a far-right, anti-LGBTQ+ legal organization designated by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) as a “hate group.” In the lawsuit, ADF referred to Washington’s conversion therapy ban as a “counseling censorship law” and accused the state of attempting to “insert itself into the privacy of Plaintiff’s counseling room and censor his discussion and exploration of certain ideas with his young clients.”
The evil in human form
The splc isn't so nice either from what I've heard.
