The ‘Underwood’ lmao 😂 Thanks for linking this
Having never really tried this sever before, I’m curious about the difference between the interesting finger configurations with ‘flicks’ and just straight up palming the ball and imparting spin with your entire hand.
I definitely got more RPM with the flick then a a palm or snap. Morgan Evans gets crazy spin and he does something a bit different.
Straight up a really resourceful video. I am getting really good at chainsaw to a point where opponents have a constant doubt and I am having unforced errors on serve like 1-2 per entire game. I really think chainsaw will be banned, so fingers spin might be the way to go. What I would like you to respond if you ca. - do you adjust your serve speed to hit the baseline vs sideline, long vs short (near the kitchen) ??
Yeah absolutely. I’m saving some of those tips for an advanced video but I also turn either direction. So sometimes instead of facing left, I’ll face right.
this is such a good video. A couple thoughts would be that the amount that its telegraphed has to be about equally as valued as the rpm. I would say this version is a little harder to see what's going on. Side note you could even hide the ball behind your paddle or add misdirection to your elbow movement if people are starting to read you. I'm not convinced ab the rpm yet, it would be awesome if Zane was able to measure the rpm on his ball as he is seeming to get a little more pop than you. This is really quality content and I thought it was cool that you drew some inspiration from other sports, very smart!
Great points, I hadn’t thought about hiding the ball behind the paddle yet 🤔 that’s so smart. I’ll see if I can get Zane to send me some slowmo foootage
Yeah it might be kinda awkward, but in the video you were pretty close to doing it already.
Super useful video, thanks! I think the best part of this serve (aside from its apparent effectiveness) is that it wouldn't be made illegal if the provisional rules that permitted the chainsaw are repealed.
Exactly! That’s what I’m hoping for.
I can't do it with my index/middle fingers, but I can with my thumb/middle. Does that make a difference or is it just preference?
I personally get more RPM with my index and middle, but the thumb/middle is fine i guess.
Try doing the index and ring like I showed
Thanks for the response, man!
Shea, now that you've got the "Underwood" have you given up the Chainsaw? Or is there some reason to keep both tools in your toolbox?
I’ve only been using the finger spin serve recently. It seems useless to practice the chainsaw when all signs are pointing towards its discontinuation.
I tried a couple practice flicks and it really isn't easy on the fingers. I'm guessing the older players won't be able to do it, further increasing the advantage of youth if this catches on.
I screwed around with it today. I was geting better at consistently getting it in but I really wasn't getting the kick action I'd have liked. I think maybe I need to spin it harder but at that point I think I agree with you it really could start to hurt my fingers.
Great video and post. I think I'm going to try to learn this serve
Good luck 👍
I feel like my serve has leveled up and I'm not even at the courts. Not only the technique but the insight in this video just unlocked so much potential. Gotta get to work on my RPMs.
Great attitude, would love to see some progress vids from you
I practiced this toss in my bedroom for about half an hour and headed out to the courts this morning to see what I could do with it. Lo and behold, it really works. To my delight, my Underwood serve is better than my Chainsaw serve. My spin towards me is better than my spin away from me, but I'm sure both will improve over time. I look forward to trying this out in a game. u/SheasCode, you are a pickleball genius.
Yooooo!!!! I’m happy to hear that. Take it easy on those fingers though it really does start to hurt after some time. Appreciate your support 🙏
This is seriously the best pickleball video I've ever seen. Why? Because it is useful. Thank you Shea for helping me improve my game. Please keep up the great content.
Dude! Thanks for that support. I put a lot of time into this one so really appreciate that comment.
Thank you! I cannot tell you how many videos have a catchy hook of a title, and simply provide a simplified explanation without providing discrete details and instructions. Well done
Hey bud, great video. I've been practicing this technique for about 2 weeks now, and I'd say it's got lots of potential.
One thing I'd say is instead of turning my body then tossing and turning, I actually just pivot my wrist in the direction of the side I'm forward flicking. It's quite a bit easier but takes more effort to nail the flick.
The backwards flick is much harder for me, but I assume everyone is different.
I will say that these techniques bruise the snuff out of my fingers. Super intense bruising from the pressure. Still, it's fun and I'm into trying it more. Thanks for the video!
