What are some of the wildest theories about the Harry Potter books/movies?

Which plot threads got abandoned and never properly resolved?

And what elements of the story could have been incredible, if they’d played out slightly differently?

For example:

The Dursley’s weren’t always awful, but rather became that way as result of spending more than a decade in close proximity to a horcrux.

I am very disappointed about all the weird stuff in the Department of Mysteries that never became relevant. I would have loved to see the brains return. Or some creepy subplot about the archway of death.
