Carbon Fiber intake for AMG Mercedes from 3D Printed Plug

This was my first ever venture into making anything from Carbon (or any similar fabric) and was a new skill I decided to try and learn during the never-ending Covid Lockdowns (in Australia). I started by taking countless photos and measurements of the standard intake and then modeling it in Fusion 360. This was also my first complex 3D model in Fusion so that was a huge learning curve. Once completed, I then 3D printed a dozen or more prototypes to verify fitment and once I was happy I printed out the final plug in PLA. The plug was then sprayed with body filler/primer and sanded smooth. 3 layers of Carbon were added (wet layup) and vacuum bagged after each layer. Once cured, it was sanded and prepped for a clear coat. The plug was then “melted” out using a hot water bath and a lot of pulling. Finally, it was clear coated and polished.

I am no expert in this by any mean - all trial and error with many failed attempts, but happy to have learnt a new skill and produce a really nice end product.
