I thought I was able to forgive and forget but it is proving to be very difficult.
My (27f) boyfriend (29m) of almost a year now in the past broke my trust.
The first time was I forgot to take my birth control. I told him and that we needed to be careful for the next week and that same day he did the exact opposite and I had to go to the pharmacy. This was about 3 months into the relationship.
The second time was he was sick and I was trying to set some alarms on his phone for him to remember to take his medication when I saw he had tinder and bumble downloaded. The apps said the last time he had opened them was 4 days prior. I was hurt and didn't even look through the apps because I was scared of what I would find. (Past relationship trauma) I wish I would've at this point though. The next day I asked him about it and he said he just forgot that he had them on his phone. He had gotten a new phone and everything switched over. Ib asked why he had used them 4 days ago which he said that he was deleting them because his roommate had brought up if he had the apps or not. I asked if I could see the apps to make sure he deleted them and he refused to show me. He said that I was breaking his trust by not believing him. Honestly I'm a fool and should've just trusted my gut but I dropped it that day. The next day I told him it was still bothering me and I wanted to see and he let me re-download the apps and he did delete them. I still feel like he had to of been hiding something from me. This was about 5 months into the relationship.
The third time he was drinking behind my back. He was drinking too help with pain so he could fall asleep at night. I had a talk with him about it and he promised me he would stop. I told him that night that I was going home to think and that I would see him tomorrow. Except I waited in his house to see if he would still do it. About 10 min with me sitting there I heard him start doing it and I walked into his room and called him pathetic and then left. He ended up calling me a bunch and texting me asking me to please forgive him and to help him get better and that he has a problem. I gave in. Like a fool. He of course kept doing it. His mom was coming into town and I told him that at the very least please don't do it while his mom was here. He promised he wouldn't yet lied and still did. Yet I still forgave him. I guess this counts as the 4th time he broke my trust but it was all within a week it kinda just blends into the same time. This was about 5 or 6 months into the relationship.
The fourth time he was on instagram and I was looking at his phone with him. Some model girl story popped up and he slid up and said something similar to that she had nice tits but he content was trash and she should stop posting. I thought it was weird but kinda laughed it off and he thought it was funny. About a week later I got curious if she ever replied to him. I'm not the type to look through someone's phone but with the dating apps in the past I was feeling a little betrayed. When I looked at his DMs I saw so many girl that had similar messages. Some of them saying that the girl was a dumb bitch. Some of them saying that she needs to post more pictures of her ass and nobody cares about what else she posts. It was probably about 10-15 different insta model girls. There was also one girl that he had met and set her a fire emoji to her story that you couldn't see anymore. When he came back in the room I asked him about the message with the girl from the last week. He said she never said anything back. (Which is true. None of these girls ever said anything back that I saw) when I asked if he messaged other girls like that he said no. I asked him really are you sure? And asked to see his phone. He gave me his phone and all the messages were gone from all the model girls. He deleted them in the 2 minute conversation we were having. I told him I had already seen the messages and called him a liar. He told me that he felt ashamed for texting the girls but it was just a joke that him and his brother used to do for shits and giggles. When I asked why he was doing it he said him and his brother were talking on the phone one day and started doing it again. He said he never was trying to get anything out of it and apologized profusely. I told him it's not the fact that he was messaging them it's that he deleted them right in front of me and looked me in the eye and lied straight to my face. I asked about the fire emoji story girl and he said that she just had posted a picture of a hat that he liked. Obviously I figured he was lying but I told him I would give him one more chance and if he messed up again I was done. Really done. This was around 8 months into the relationship.
These are all the times that he has lied and broken my trust. I honestly know how dumb this sounds but he really is the nicest guy I have ever been with. He tries his hardest to make sure I'm happy. He cooks for me and helps me with chores around the house. Helps take care of my dogs when I need someone to watch them or go for walks. He really does try to make me happy. I don't know if maybe this is just the bare minimum you should expect from someone because I've had very abusive relationships in the past. Boyfriends, friends, family have never had very great relationships. Now that you have all the information my question is how do I get past this? I really do enjoy being with him and I want to be with him but at the same time I am about to buy a rv and travel and I don't know if I should include him in this. He wants to go half on it. I want to trust him so badly. It is just so difficult. I'm not sure what to do. I've thought about maybe mentioning couples therapy and seeing where that goes.
TL:DR My(27f) boyfriend (29m) has lied and broken my trust from dating apps, Instagram, and substance abuse. I'm going to be buying and RV and traveling but I'm not sure I can even trust him. I want to forgive and forget. How do I get past this? Is this something that can actually be forgotten and forgiven?
