Regency Era (Pride & Prejudice, Bridgerton) RPG

Hi all,

I just wanted to share that an alpha draft of our new fan-created RPG for playing in spaces and worlds like Bridgerton and Emma and Downton Abbey and all that is going live over the next few weeks.

https://manysideddice.com/2021/09/11/the-regency-collection/

We have been excited about developing it and love putting it out there for the swaths of new gamers to the hobby (and old veterans as well) that are just as amazed and encouraged by the diversity growing in the space.

Maybe you are, too.

We call this our passion project and wanted to share with y'all, in case you were into it.

My little dream is art and fashion and tropes to decorate the whole experience and give people their alternative power and delight fantasies. The creative lead on the project is a dear friend and she's made some awesome flavor.

I won't spam this here or anything, but I've hoped I've been a credible voice and contributor to RPGs as a hobby and players wanting to enjoy it (mostly on r/dndnext). So, forgive me if I'm just tickled and into an off-convention game like this.

I loved Good Society and really wanted to support like minded rpg enthusiasts.

If I already have Good Society, which I do, why do I want your game?

I'd say several reasons might be that it's just a free fan thing, was made for the Bridgerton era (not just the Jane Austen home of tropes) and other newer media that Good Society predated a touch, and has more "game elements" like dice and discreet mini-games and events that comport to conventional tabletop experiences.

(I loved Good Society, but it was not as intuitive to run for many RPG enthusiasts and didn't quite give "character rpg" notes and flavors that may be more familiar to folks or systems to reward the Stardew crowd... like building up a Family and Estate together).

Cool, thanks!

Awesome! I’ve been working on a regency Pendragon hack and have been enjoying the process. It’s no where near to being done yet but it’s good fun!

Good luck with your project!

Oh, that sounds amazing!

Interesting. Can you talk more about the system you are working on?

We'll definitely be sharing those bits--I've watched them grow into something pretty fun over the many weeks of in house development. It's really it's own thing, I wish I could just say "it's like This Game or That Game"--but a lot of the work has been to make it customized enough to be it's own game game, y'know?

I'd talk about it now, but I don't want to get ahead of any of it. Just thought I'd start by seeing if people were interested, you know?

I can share that the whole thing flows like scenes in a book/movie/tv show. Acts. Chapters. Big Event minigames. No combat system (physically) to speak of (there is some, but it's very annotated and minor and doesn't account for any actual fighting); but it's got a nice fun social combat system... a game of words and positions and the like.

But, plans can fail (rolling) and execution can be good and bad and middling. Chance factors in.

I, myself, didn't know anything at all much about the Regency tropes--but I was and am the world's biggest Downton Abbey fan (for instance) and the idea of playing that stuff just excites me (as a Vampire the Masquerade super fan from the 90's and a D&D 5e publisher, even).

Fair enough. I guess I will just have to wait then. ;)

Thank you for posting this, it looks lovely.

"The Meddler" sounds especially fun to play.

Is there any advice on how the Author can craft suitable scenarios?

Oh, for sure. I know she's (the lead on it) posting up in the coming weeks about it all (there's REAMS of stuff written by the team). Author guidance and Collection/Novel/Story/Chapter rules cover all sorts of advice on a novice constructing their own story to have people play through. I don't want to step on their moments, but I was just so excited about sharing.

Balls, business, duels, gossip, prestation, schemes and matchmaking and family-building, have wistful scenes and romantic tension and conflicts between duty and personal goals, etc.

The tone would cleave to a more light-hearted Bridgerton feel. Something with it's humor and light drama--though the system could be and will have examples of more dramatic or comedic or alternate play.

The narrative structure suggested by the system (play drives major events; so sessions building TO a major event--that's the cycle... chapter, Event; chapter, Event) which helps regulate the narration and story. It's a waltz. The scenes are presented allowing for longer term goals, often resolved or confounded by the Event.

I just recently started playing TTRPGs (been a video game RPG-er for years). Wondering if my wife might be into this. She’s huge into these types of shows/books etc. Definitely interested to know more and if it would be good for relative newbies in the space?

The lead designer for it is posting up her notes and preliminary game components on our site (manysideddice.com). It was/is a passion project for her, but I think we'll end up publishing a finished copy some time in the early Spring.

So far? Even as someone NOT into that sort of theme/arena? I've enjoyed the little playtests FAR more than I thought I might.

I’ll keep my eyes peeled and watch the site for updates THANKS!
