Sexism and how it's hurting me to the core.
Throwaway, obviously.
If there were a 2xcirclejerk, I'd post this there.
Anyway, I've been pretty upset lately. I haven't been a Redditor for long, about 6 months, but I've been experiencing severe gender discrimination against me pretty much anywhere I go on Reddit (except, thankfully, in this wonderful sub). r/books, tipofmytongue, doesn't matter. I'm a pretty easygoing person and I like to post things that I think won't get anyone mad at me. But I've had men get flat-out enraged at something I say, and then blame my opinion on my sex. They will even go through my post history and point to the fact that I contribute to 2x often, as though that somehow proves I'm an evil female? It hurts, and some of the comments have gotten vicious. I don't reply (feeding the trolls, anyone?), but it doesn't mean that I don't spend a lot of time crying, with that horrible yucky pang in my heart, over the hurtful comments. It's gotten to the point where I only post in this sub, because this is the only place where I am accepted for who I am, a pretty shy, overly nice gal who just wants to have some fun conversations with people about topics we like.
I came to Reddit for the community, and I want that still. I've never experienced forums that have been this awful to me. Usually I understand people getting down and dirty in r/politics or r/atheism, but not in r/tinyhouses. It's getting me depressed, and I should probably leave this site, but honestly, it's the only thing getting me through some crap going on in real life right now.
2x, how do you deal with sexism on the internet? Have you confined yourself to this sub as well? How do I get over my crippling fear of posting even the most innocuous comment? I don't want to start any drama, so please don't link to/refer to specific subs, threads, or users on Reddit.
TLDR: Experiencing crippling sadness thanks to mean people on the internet. How do I deal?
Edit: Thank you very much for your help. I would reply to all of you, but I'm afraid I'd be saying the same things over and over. I wasn't expecting this many replies, but I'm super grateful. I've also done some digging and found a few subs I believe I will be comfortable on.
