Did people really think OJ Simpson didn’t do it?

The whole OJ trial happened before I was born, so I didn’t get to really experience it. I don’t know that much about it really, but I get the impression that there’s a general consensus that he did it. Were there actually a good amount of people in the general public that believed he didn’t do it? Was it really a divided issue among races? Do some people still think he didn’t do it?
