Sleeping Chill
Melancholy is cooked into these September afternoons
when summer hangs on only in namesake
Leo’s fiery siege now many weeks past
Without protest she allows
The chill of shadows and mornings
To bed down next to her
While her head fills with the distant memory of that
Long interlude at the drive in before the movie could start
Because the sun refused to set on anybody’s schedule but its own
The boys danced to Love Potion Number Nine
We took selfies of our love
Rolling in the fumes of June’s approach
beneath the opened hatch
Night fell inevitably
The movie started and came to its end
The golden hour passed
Now our heads rest
With hundreds of miles between us
A new season's chill comes to
Put the dream to sleep
There's hundreds of miles between us
