1.1 Gabby Petito: The Basics + The Beginning of A Case
Q: Who is Gabby Petito?
- A: Gabby Petito was a 22 year old start-up ‘Van Life’ want-to-be travel blogger and Instagram influencer (@gabspetito) who was in the process of launching a YouTube channel (Nomadic Statik) when she went missing while on a US cross country road trip in late August, 2021. She and her 23 year old fiancé left New York in July, with a plan to drive cross country. They were to be documenting the trip along the way, eventually to conclude in Oregon sometime in October, 2021. Instead, the last sighting of Gabby is confirmed as having been August 25, with messages from her phone being sent on August 27 (via Snapchat to a friend; a text to her mother. A final text to her mother, Nichole, on August 30. It is unclear whether the messages on the 27th were sent by Gabby or someone who had access to her phone. While unconfirmed, it is believed that someone else sent the final text on August 30. On 19 September 2021, the FBI confirmed that a body found in Grand Teton National Park matches the description of Gabby Petito. An autopsy and forensic examination later confirmed that the remains were that of Gabby. The FBI ended their press conference by asking for privacy for Gabby’s family as they grieve this tremendous loss, and made sure to state that the investigation remains ongoing. The cause of death has yet to be released. The manner of death was homicide. (Source)
Q: Is there a timeline that’s easy to follow to help me understand events until this point?
-
A: Yes. Here is a Timeline of Significant Events Surrounding Gabby’s Disappearance Not every single alleged sighting will be included. What’s posted here has come via law enforcement and news outlets, generally with some type of confirmation.
-
(Note: TikTok, Instagram and other social media platforms are not where information is sourced. These are not considered ‘reliable sources’ save for the pages of very specific people and/or organizations. The only exception to the above is for Miranda Baker. This comes solely because LE commented on her story, adding it to part of their timeline. Because she was so public in releasing a statement, her story from her lips is used as a source.)
1.2 Relationships
Q: Who are Gabby’s parents?
- A: Gabby’s biological parents are Joe Petito and Nichole Schmidt. They are no longer together. Nichole is married to Jim Schmidt, a firefighter. Joe is married to Tara Petito. Joe has stated that their respective spouses are not ‘stepparents’; they are all Gabby’s ‘parents.’ We may use the term stepfather/stepmother in order to distinguish if it is necessary, however, we felt it important to note Joe’s comment out of respect for all 4 people who lost their daughter so tragically.
Q: Who is Gabby’s fiancé and how old is he?
- A: His name is Brian Laundrie. He’s 23 and until the pair left on this trip, both Brian and Gabby were living with his parents, Chris and Roberta Laundrie. Brian later returned home driving their converted transit camper van without her.
Q: Were Gabby and Brian actually engaged? I’ve read they called it off.
- A: Yes, they were engaged. They became engaged in July of 2020, however, in an interview with the Daily Mail, Gabby’s mum, Nichole Schmidt cast doubt on this, stating she ‘believed’ the two had ‘called off their engagement before the trip because they were too young to marry.’ (Source) After delving further in to it, we cannot confirm this to be the case. Gabby and Brian were still engaged.
Q: How do you know they were still engaged?
- A: We’re going by the Moab police report officer notes, camera footage, as well as a separate witness. Not only did Gabby and Brian state as much to one of the officers who interacted with them in Moab, Utah following the domestic, Gabby also told a shop owner in Victor, Idaho that they were engaged on/around August 26. (Source)
Q: Was Gabby pregnant?
- A: No. Teton County Coroner, Dr. Brent Blue has also confirmed this via press conference regarding the post mortem.
Q: What did Brian do for a living?
- A: Both he and Gabby worked at Publix for a time. It appears that they quit that job in order to go on this trip.
Q: How did Gabby and Brian meet?
- A: Gabby and Brian attended the same high school. He is a year older. They were not high school sweethearts. They reconnected later on (some articles have said via Facebook) and began dating, reportedly in March of 2019. Brian’s family moved from Long Island to Florida and Gabby moved from Long Island to be with him early on in their relationship. (Source Partial)
Q: Had Gabby traveled with Brian before?
- A: Yes. In his first interview on the Dr. Phil Show, Joe Petito says that he leased a small car for Gabby so she and Brian could do a road trip to California and Oregon a year and a half ago. It wasn’t as big a trip, nor did they convert a van, but they apparently made it through that trip without any problems. (Source)
##Q: When was Gabby’s father on Dr. Phil?
-
A: The first interview was given while Gabby was still a missing person. You can watch the first interview he gave here: Joe Petito Talks To Dr. Phil
-
There is a second interview as well.
-
On October 5, 2021, Joe and his wife Tara, as well as Gabby’s mum and her husband, Jim, also sat down to talk with Dr. Phil about three weeks after her death and memorial service: Petito / Schmidt Family On Dr. Phil
1.3 Signs of Trouble: Moab, Utah + Traffic Stop
Q: What is the ‘Moab incident’ people keep referencing?
- A: Witnesses called 911 after seeing an altercation between Brian and Gabby outside the Moonflower Co-Op in Moab, Utah. One witness tells the dispatcher that the guy was hitting the girl, they ran up and down the street a couple times and jumped in the van and left. Police were dispatched to the Moonflower Co-Op, while other officers were sent in pursuit of the van. They were pulled over and questioned for about an hour before police decided to separate them for the night. Gabby was given the van; Brian was put in a hotel. They were told not to contact one another at all that night and take time to cool off.
Q: Where can I watch the police body cam footage from the Moab traffic stop?
- A: The raw version may be viewed here.
Q: Who owned the van?
- A: The Ford Transit Connect (significantly smaller than the full-sized Ford Transit Van) belonged to Gabby. It is registered in her name and her name only. At this point, any suggestion that Brian has any legal claim to take the van is incorrect. They were not married; it is not joint property. Her father, Joe, makes it perfectly clear that it was Gabby’s and hers alone.
Q: Is this case connected to the two married women who reported feeling like they were being watched by a creepy guy, only to have been found murdered?
- A: No. While one of the women did work at ‘The Moon Flower Co-Op,’ which is where the domestic between Gabby and Brian took place, police have now stated that the two incidents are not connected. They did not elaborate or name a suspect in that case, however. (Source 1) (Source 2)
Q: Did Brian fly back to Florida after the Moab incident? Wasn’t this the midst of his road trip with Gabby?
-
A: This has now been confirmed that yes, Brian did return to Florida around the 17-23 of August. The source is Brian’s sister. Until October 4, there was only one article in The Daily Mail, and I’d been unable to cross reference the validity. (Source: The Deseret News/MSN)
-
Here’s the gist: From August 17 - August 23, 2021, Brian Laundrie made a trip back to Florida, allegedly to clean out a storage unit or storage locker he and Gabby shared.
-
In terms of media, the article initially came via The Daily Mail. The information was taken from a now-deleted Facebook post that was made by Gabby’s stepfather’s brother (her step uncle.) In a handwritten note, he’s written down major events that occurred up until 8/30, remarking that it is the timeline as his family understands it. (Source: The Daily Mail)
2.1 The Search for Gabby
Q: Where was Gabby last seen?

Q: Does anyone know what date BL retained legal counsel? Specifically, was it before Gabby was reported missing?
-
A: Undetermined. As best we’ve been able to determine, at the latest, it was the 10th (Gabby’s father made a report requesting a welfare check) or the 11th of September. Others have suggested it may well have been sooner based on the August 31 cancellation of the camping trip his parents were supposed to take on September 1, but that is heresy and we don’t have first hand knowledge that this is the case.
-
For now, we’ve been unable to confirm the exact date he was officially contacted or retained. This question will be updated accordingly if a clear answer becomes available.
Q: Why hasn’t Brian Laundrie been arrested?

Q: Was there a warrant out for Brian Laundrie’s arrest?
- A: Yes. The warrant comes at the federal level and was issued because Brian (‘allegedly’) committed fraud when he used Gabby’s credit/debit cards to the tune of over $1,000. It is possible that there may be a sealed indictment for the Murder of Gabby Petito, but that has not been anything confirmed by the FBI.
Q: Where is Brian Laundrie?
-
A: Update: The FBI has confirmed that human remains found in a nature park are those of Brian Laundrie. Brian is deceased. Cause and manner of death is unknown. (Source)
-
Unclear. His parents have one story (he’s missing after going for a hike at Carlton Reserve on September 14*.) Many people believe he’s on the run. Some people believe he’s hiding. Brian’s older sister, Cassie, visited the camp ground with her young children and her husband on the 6th. They spent the afternoon, had dinner and left after having S’mores around 8:00pm because the children had school the next day.
