Can You Train A Reliable Off Leash Recall With No Ecollar?

Is it possible to have a reliable recall off leash with your dog, without the use of an ecollar at all? Distraction and all included eventually.

I have been wondering this and whether anyone has achieved this. I have never used the ecollar before and all dogs I grew up with had no ecollar. Our family dog would sometimes get out of our yard but would always come back when we called even though we never trained my family's dogs. (I was kid)

After discovering dog training, I saw that a reliable recall off leash with a dog seemed impossible without the use of an ecollar or introduction to one. So Is it possible without an ecollar and have you achieved this?
