The Sopranos and The Kinks

In particular, "I'm Not Like Everybody Else".

So, I just recently found the live version from 1996 that's featured in Cold Cuts (and had it on repeat for most of the weekend)...

...I guess it's finally sinking in how many layers there are to that song.

The 1996 version is almost as much a lament as it is an anthem of rebellion. Or maybe it speaks to the cost of being a "rebel" or selfish or what have you. Or maybe I'm reading too much into it.

But the great thing about the song is that you can shout along to it with gusto and not even have a second thought about some of the potentially deeper implications.

Just like quoting the Sopranos.

And I think they both have some equally profound layers should you want to ponder them. Or you can just take them at surface level and have a rip roaring good time.

I'm in awrr of them.

That's a perfect example.

Janice was improving herself and making life better for her and those around her. And Tony came in there and knocked down her self improvement sand castle.

But, Janice has done enough heinous stuff on the show and implied by the show for us to feel like maybe she doesn't deserve a second chance or it'll all fall apart in a week anyway.

So, we, the audience, can kind of go a couple different ways with that and perhaps be justified. Or maybe there's something greater in there "to get". Or not.

Who knows these things?

Kinks also appear multiple times in S3ep6 University. Living on a thin line by the Kinks.

The Kinks invented Heavy Metal and were pioneering many other things, they really are as groundbreaking as the show itself.

Yeah, Lola made it into the weekend mix.

Hard to believe that was 50 years ago and we're still failing to come to grips with reality and what not. The Davies bros were geniuses way ahead of their time.

I stumbled on a quote from Jimmy Page where he gives them credit for starting the whole riff based rock and roll thing. It's a shame they fought so much.
