We no longer live in a serious country
Well said Mert
Death throes of a collapsing empire
[serious] I won’t take any of these “green” people seriously until they acknowledge switching to nuclear is the most viable option for clean power
That’s what you got out of that?
No this is an aside about the green new deal
Wtf are you talking about
This is an aside about the green new deal
I am a HUGE fan of nuclear power
Is this some kind of SNL bit?
Hopefully she appears on Joe Rogan with Bret Weinstein soon
You sure know how to add nothing of value to the conversation while also bringing in something completely irrelevant every single time, it’s almost impressive.
I’m conservative leaning but truly don’t understand the rights problem with green energy and healthcare. No Republican has cut my taxes to noticeable degree, so it’s not about government spending obviously because they have no issue sending billions (trillions over a decade) to Lockheed or foreign governments. If I’m going to spend taxes regardless of candidate what better thing than healthcare for myself and the conservation of the planet?
Also Democrats aren’t blameless. With the amount we are taxed there is no reason we can’t do it without increasing spending and taxes. We have plenty of bloated bureaucratic waste and foreign aid we could reallocate.
This stupid back and forth all while I go without ever seeing a dime back in services is why I don’t vote. Lower my taxes to near 0 or start showing me some bang for my buck.
A generous way to view it is how much Texas relies on oil for their economy. Republicans can’t be nationally relevant if they lose Texas, so they have to double down on it.
I also think there’s a problem with the profit motive (shocking). Obviously there are massive profit incentives just behind oil and health insurance, but beyond that having healthcare tied to employment is a massive coercive power against the organization of labor. People might strike for a time without pay, but would you risk your child’s health insurance, or even your own when the risk is a lifetime of debt and everything you’ve worked for being ruined with just some poor timing? Especially when there’s been a boiling frog effort since Jimmy Carter at least to undermine labor, so the strike would probably be broken anyway. So there’s a massive incentive across the financial elite, who fund both parties, to keep that boot on workers necks. And the financial elite also control the media, 6 corporations control 90 percent of the information Americans receive. Even aside from that coercive power, a massive percent of the media elites financial portfolios are likely tied in oil and healthcare. And for anymore evidence on how the media works against the organization of labor, mine workers have been striking in Alabama for months and there’s been hardly any talk about it. But you can bet your ass they’ll be talking about Nicki Minaj’s cousins ballsack.
There’s no inherent motivation to make a fact based media outlet under a system that’s driven by the profit motive. Obviously relying on culture war bullshit is enough for them to stay profitable, and it stays consistent with their other financial incentives. They just jump from controversy to controversy to satiate the market for culture war bullshit that they’ve cultivated over the last 20+ years. And since those 6 corporations control 90 percent of the information Americans receive, they create the narrative, set the Overton window for acceptable debate, and essentially control the direction the country goes. And that’s not to mention how they fund elections, I think something like 90 percent of congressional races are won by the candidate with more money, and 40 percent of Americans said they couldn’t afford a 400 dollar emergency.
It’s a single party state with the illusion of choice. Like Boss Tweed said “I could care less who wins the election, so long as I’m the one doing the nominating.” It isn’t an issue of republicans vs democrats, it’s an issue of workers vs the elite. They’ve just created a culture where they’ve convinced large swaths of both political party voters that their problems are the fault of other voters when both are constrained by the same false choice.
Which is why I fully think people who vote for Biden is just as bad as people who vote trump. You are accepting that you want nothing to change by voting against the other guy instead of for your own values. Losing a massive amount of votes to a third party or to apathy would send a message that the institution has to change for the benefit of the people if it wants to survive. Nobody can see past the next four years, to them four years of trump or Biden because they “threw away” their vote means the death of the nation.
It will never happen, people are so tribal they are willing to accept this system and will vote D or R until we collapse, screaming all the way down at the other side instead of themselves for being a part of the system the whole time. Blue no matter who or Red or dead is the dumbest fucking way to cast your vote. THAT is the real vote throwaway to me, to tell someone you are ok with how things are even though you are not.
Yeah the problem is that people have been convinced that voting is the extent of political participation. If all you’re doing is voting, and maybe contributing a bit of money to a candidate, it’s like you’re doing nothing at all. Bernie had one of the robust volunteer and smaller donor networks ever, but it didn’t mean shit because the finances were easily matched, and the volunteers still didn’t have near the reach of the media. And then you consider that there are 435 house seats, 100 senate seats, and countless seats for both local and state governments that would need to be flipped to do anything of consequence. How are people supposed to competitively fund candidates across all those places when they couldn’t even outspend for one candidate?
I don’t have a massive issue with people who vote in a way that they think will minimize damage, but it’s ultimately just reinforcing that same race to the bottom. Even voting for a third party raises the same issues with funding candidates and media manipulation. The media has spent years vilifying Jill Stein for Hillary’s loss, even though Gary Johnson got 3x more votes and Hillary shot herself in the foot by not campaigning at all in swing states in the weeks leading up to the election.
Nothing will change without a mass labor movement, which is another reason why the cultivation of culture wars is so important. The more divided workers are, they weaker they are.
See I was even willing to put many of my beliefs aside to put Bernie in, just as a drastic change. Hell I’d put us in to full communism because I believe that is easier to contend with than the corporate hellscape we found ourselves in, which is crazy strong.
Nixon created the EPA. People forget that
Yes. I’m not religious, not even a little. But if I were like many R’s are, wouldn’t I want to protect what the good lord gave us? It just doesn’t compute with me. Post 2000s GOP had really sent their base down a rabbit hole of retardation. But then again so have dems.
I disagree with your point about deans. 10% of Democrats are crazy Twitter people and 75% of republicans think the election was stolen
90% of Democrats voted a dementia patient into office. Seriously. Don’t compare Biden to trump, because I have no love for that man so it’s really not an argument. Compare his speaking now to his speaking 10 years ago. He’s regressed a great deal. How was this the guy the DNC said “yep, this is our guy”? You had a pool of better choices, why Biden?
