Why was Freddie’s voice so bad in 79?

Like during the Jazz/Live Killers era? I love the footage from that era, like the leather hat and all that stuff, and even though I wasn’t a huge fan of Jazz(I get why some are), I’d still like to see a whole DVD from that show, I just don’t know what happened to his voice.
