Help with an apartment search?

Hey all! I'm hoping someone on here can help me with something.

So I'm in the hiring process for the Washington County Sheriff's Office, and if I'm hired (I should know soonish), then I'd be looking to move somewhere around Hagerstown (not the city itself), Halfway, etc in October/early November. I'm from Howard County, MD, so I'm not familiar with Washington County at all. I have some specific areas/places I wish to be close by, so I've been looking at apartments myself online on some rental websites. The websites say that they have some 1 bedrooms available, but when I call the actual property, they tell me they don't have anything available and there's a big waiting list.

Is there anyone on here, like a real estate person, or someone else who might know where there would actually be things available in the next month? I would preferably like to be under $1,000 or right around $1,000 - barely over at all, if I can help it. Thank you for any help or guidance!
