Never Let Me Down (1987) Track By Track Review.
Hello. Been another few days. Do you guys prefer when it's like that or do you want me to try to do daily? I can do either. Let me know.
Today, I throw Bowie's statement back at his face. Yeah he let me down once, but will he do it again? I don't know. I hope this albums songs are good. Bowie actually plays some instruments on here! Yay! There is also only one cover this time, so we got some original songs here. With all that is this album better or equal to Tonight? We will see.
Eleven 80's songs with a thirst of a few great songs. Let's go.
-
Day-In Day-Out -. Drums come in loud here. I find his voice interesting here. I kind of like it and prefer it to what he did last album. It still sounds like he's trying to be someone else but he's trying a bit harder here. I like this one. It's a song I can sway to for sure. I like his lyrics a bit. This is a great song. I really like it. A promising opener right here. 4/5.
-
Time Will Crawl - This song has his best lyrics of the decade to me. I've listened to this before so that's why I'm saying it. Maybe another song here has better ones. His lyrics are actually informative and speak on a topic that's controversial. It has a dark meaning but we have a joyful tune. Classic Bowie. I like this song as well. It's really good. My favorite so far. I listened to this in the days following this post so I'm a bit biased, but I don't get tired listening to this. 4/5.
-
Beat of Your Drum - Synths to begin. The drums have been loud here on this album so far. His voice is good here. I cant understand his voice perfectly here though. I kind of dig this one. It's on a level that's not average. It's a good one. I don't have much to say about this one. Really is a nice one. 3.5/5.
-
Never Let Me Down - This is the first not good song here. His voice does not fit this song at all. It doesn't blend. I can barely stand his voice here. Everything else is good but his voice turns me off instead of on. It's a good tune but his voice is ugh. It's a good one but to me if he did his vocals differently, it would be better. 2.5/5.
-
Zeroes - I've listened to the 2018 version and I liked that one. They begin differently. This tries to play off a live version but it's not. Drums sound basic. I don't like the theatrics this song is playing. Beginning drags on too long. I find the lyrics interesting though. I prefer the other version a lot though. This is not good. This is too much. 2/5.
-
Glass Spider - More theatrics here. This was the basis of his world tour he did for this album. I prefer the Future Legend speech. The beginning also drags. It doesn't have to be this long. If he wanted to tell me a story, I'd put on pajamas. It's kind of interesting in a Bowie type of way, but that's not what I'm here for. This song is a turn off immediately when he starts singing though. I can't get into it. Carlos Alomar is trying his heart out though. Too bad it was on this album. 1.5/5.
-
Shining Star (Makin' My Love) - Almost all of these songs are five minutes. I think it hurts this album. This is an interesting one. Reminds me of The Boys of Summer. This is kind of a nothing song to me. It does nothing but it's a good one. Yeah it's an average one I guess. It does nothing for me. 3/5.
-
New York's In Love - New Yorker here. Not in love. Eh this is also a nothing song. He's trying something here with the echoes and the loud usage of the backing vocals. It doesn't do much at all though. Eh I don't know. The album had a promising start and now it's just meh. Sucks. Carlos is great here though. Yeah it's a weird one. 2.5/5.
-
'87 and Cry - This sounds like all the other songs. There snot much variety here. They all have a similar backing to them. I don't know what to think of this one either. It's a meh song as well. I don't understand why most of these songs are doing that for me. Yeah it's not doing much for me. God bless you if you love it. 2.5/5.
-
Too Dizzy - This song was left off the 2018 remaster. Wait it's not even on Spotify. Are you kidding me? He tried to erase this song from everywhere. Wow. It's not a bad one though. It's basic though. The lyrics do nothing for me. Don't understand why he didn't like it as much though. I'll have to research that. I mean it wouldn't have made the album different. Weird. 2.5/5.
-
Bang Bang - Iggy cover here. It's got a rock sound to it. I don't have anything to say about this one either. Half of these tracks are just nothing's. Sucks. Maybe it's just me. I don't know. I don't have anything to say. 2.5/5.
Album Rating: 5.5/10
Best Song: Time Will Crawl
Worst Song: Glass Spider
Well this album is average. It's a notch higher than Tonight, so it's not his worst one. This was an interesting album too. This period gets a bad rep, and for good reason, but it's got some good songs that are worth a listen. Is the albums worth a whole sit through? Not really. Especially the last one. It's not something that I would be proud of making if I had released all the legendary albums in the seventies. Oh well.
The pop phase is over!!! We celebrate in the halls with champagne! I don't have much to say about this phase besides thank God it's over, because now I can listen to albums I am kind of excited for, like the next one! Let's get down with the Tin folks!
