Would Cuba be better off today if Castro had lost?

I asked this on r/asklatinamerica , but Jannie probably thought it was too political or something and deleted my comment. Anyways I’m just interested in what y’all gotta say.

Nah...they’re way better off with the poverty, starvation and brutal oppression.

I mean, it would either still be authoritarian like Cuba is rn but with a capitalist economy, so I guess a little better but not really? Or it would be like Taiwan and become democratic.

Just look at the context, how are the rest of the Caribbean countries doing?

Cuba is not like other Caribbean countries. Before Castro the country was one of the wealthiest nations in Latin America and was comparable to the southern United States.

Comparing Cuba to Haiti is like comparing Germany to Belarus and thinking it’s a flex that Germany is better

I think you forgot the part where if you didn’t live in Havana you were living in poverty on American owned sugar plantations.

I guess it’s very different now that Havana and rurals get to enjoy extreme poverty together.

Yes I know the whole country is now in immense poverty, but I just wanted to state it wasn’t that great before the revolution either.

Also before I forget you should look at this old U.S. document about Cuba https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1958-60v06/d499
