New fan here. What should I know?

Hi! I haven’t been totally interested in Hockey but after watching the playoffs, I wanted to try to watch a team this year. I liked your guys’ logo so I was just going to inquire what should I know about this team coming into this season.

Thomas Chabot is our best player.

Artem Zub is god-tier.

You must refer to Tim Stützle as Jimmy.

Our owner is cheap and has made countless questionable decisions which has soured the relationship with the fanbase.

We have a bright future in front of us.

We absolutely love Brady Tkachuk, he is/was seen as the leader on our team but we are currently in a situation where we are trying to re-sign him long term and a lot of frustration has built in the fanbase because we don’t know all the details as of yet.

Good to know about Jimmy. Also, cheap Ownership is basically the teams I follow for some reason.

Then you will fit right in!

Welcome abord!

Also, just out of curiosity, do hockey drafts work like Baseball where they have farm teams or basketball where the first pick immediately is supposed to contribute? Still a little bit confused about that

TheGreatJohnny44:NHL-OTT4:•

We have a farm team in the AHL (American Hockey League) which is the Belleville Senators, draft picks usually go there for a year or two to gain experience to make it in the big league afterward.

This has some exceptions like Tim Stützle who we drafted 3rd overall last year and he went straight into the lineup because of how good he was

Don’t refer to him as Jimmy. That’s a dumb nickname.

Blame Brady for giving him that name. Myself and a lot of the fan base like it. It’s sticking whether you like it or not

A lot of the fanbase also likes “Sickos”…

Wow, I bet you’re invited out a lot.

I bet you like getting blocked

Lol it’s funny cause I already have you blocked but once in a while I open up your comments to see what you’re on about.

Good riddance

The Ottawa Sens are a team on the rise. They have a lot of young, fast players, and have a bright future ahead of them. Don't expect playoffs this year, but its coming sooner than later.

Ottawa has an ingrained underdog mentality. They're not as big as Montreal or Toronto, and they don't have the resources that these "big market" teams do. Still, the Ottawa Senators make the most with what they've got. With the exception of the last few years, Ottawa has always been in the playoff picture, and they tend to do really well once they get there. The owner is notorious for not spending a lot (especially when it comes to signing bonuses), so it's extra impressive when they do well.

What's the team identity? I'd say it's a no nonsense, hard working hockey. They tend to draft/sign guys who are good team players above all else. You won't see a lot of highlight reel dekes, or flashy plays, but they're making the smart plays. To me, guys like Zub, Connor Brown, and Nick Paul exemplify what it means to be a Sen. They're hard players who never give up.

Man, I had no idea what this team was and now it’s basically Memphis Grizzlies type mentality hockey. Love it! Love this type of idea within a team.

One forgotten aspect of the Sens mentality is how sometimes they feel like the 3rd team in their own region. Ottawa is a big hockey city, but a lot of people either support the Leafs or the Canadiens (especially older Anglophones and Franco Ontarians). So the Sens really have a "prove the haters wrong" mentality even in their fanbase

Good summary

The Ottawa Senators are still very much seen as the "Pesky Sens" they never seem to give up.

I’m a Memphis Grizzlies fan so this works with me.

The Grizzlies should never have left Vancouver. ;-)

Do you live in memphis? Am I not alone in this god forsaken wasteland?

3
KoolsmanOP•

Sadly no, I live in Boston. Loved watching JJJ and Ja and eventually fell in love with everyone else on the team.

Super fast crazy highs. And super long depressing lows. This is the Sens post Alfie. P.S. fuck Melnyk

9
KoolsmanOP•

Is this year projected to be a long depressing low one or a crazy high one?

4
No_Gas_82#11 - Alfredsson•

I feel their will be periods of long losing streaks with crazy good short periods of win streaks. Defence still needs work and offence is very young.

2
fraser_94‎•

Great team to starting following as we start to see the young players transition into the league. There’s a boatload of potential!

9
KoolsmanOP•

That’s awesome. It’s always fun watching players realize their potential.

5
fraser_94‎•

It’s easier to accept the losses right now too imo

3
KoolsmanOP•

No expectations are the best type of expectations.

Our owner sucks.

Hate Toronto and Montreal.

5
KoolsmanOP•

Hate Toronto already and Montreal shouldn’t be that hard to hate

4
Scirollo#9 - Norris•
  • Gustavsson is our promising future goalie
  • Chabot is our best defenseman
  • Zub is an extremely solid defenseman and somehow a shootout specialist
  • Norris & Tkachuk are best friends
  • Batherson & Sokolov are best friends
  • Jimmy and everyone are best friends
  • Shane Pinto is genuinely a middle 6 center at 20 years old, and will be our 2C by the end of the year

BAD_CAN77•

The key to the future is #Melnykout

4
Mr_Adrift•

Don’t listen to the people hating on the owner just watch the team and enjoy! We have a special group of players coming up with great personalities so it’s going to be so much fun to watch us!!

Our most embarassing moment was when Chris Phillips scored on his own net during the SCF in 2007 during a win or die game 5

Well.. just met Pierre Dorion at a gas station about 20 mins ago..told him "good luck with brady" he laughed and said he would need it 😬 didn't exactly sound inspiring haha..for context Brady T is our RFA probably next in line to be captain..but they are struggling to come to a contract agreement
