First, they undermine your self esteem, ("...a wretch like me") and instill fear you never had before, (A lake of fire, no less). Then they offer safety from your fears, relief from your guilt, in exchange for always doing as they tell you.

That's it. You're now theirs to do with as they please. And what they please, essentially, is to keep you docile and compliant, blaming yourselves for your misfortunes, instead of blaming the real causes of your hard life, the people whose heel is on your neck.

The people who rule to enrich their cozy tribe, at your expense and at the expense of the people you love. Parasites, who take the food off the table of working people, and use it to buy a second yacht.

Your leaders love what the church does for them, and they reward the churches with massive tax breaks, cash, and privileged access to those in power.

Conservatives are in a symbiotic relationship with the established church. They shelter the church, the church opposes every progressive move ever put, every improvement in society such as anaesthesia or birth control.

If we can break that cycle, superstition and conservatism looking after each other, the world will be transformed. That's why taxing the churches is important. It's not just symbolic; let the churches pay their way and we'll see how long they last.

Take note, believers: atheists are on the march, your gravy days are numbered.
