I’m not sure why the text has formatted itself the way it has either, but I find it quite serendipitous that the bottom half seems that much more correct.
Did Coufal just lose his spot ? Based on recent performances he may have.
No he’s out injured. That’s his spot I think he’ll take it back but Ben will make him work for it
Silly goose
Johnson's willingness and ability to play on the left saved our asses last year. He wasn't great, but we would have been fucked without him after Mas and Cresswell got injured.
Specifically, I remember that he came in off the bench at LB and locked down Bale after he'd been running wild over us in the 2nd half vs Spurs at the LS last year. Bale had to move to the center to even get a sniff of the ball with Johnson tracking him. I know he wasn't on for a long period of time, but I don't think we get 3 points that match without that sub.
I think the meme is true for him going forward, but he's a solid choice defensively on either side. For reference, Coufal played on the left at the end of the Everton match (I think?) last year and he was worse than Johnson ever was on the left.
Also, he's shown that he's massively improved with his left foot this season. As of now, I'd prefer him over Mas on the left if Cresswell had to miss time.
Solid post. I think he built up a lot of goodwill with fans through doing his duty on top of his existing status as an academy graduate. I remember his fantastic debut at left back against Man City where Leroy Sane got nothing out of him. He has looked decidedly makeshift in the position since though, however admirable that he did the job, and never exuded the type of footballing confidence that he does in what we have to assume is his more natural and familiar position.
Definitely think it’s the type of experience that will benefit him in the long run. He was unlucky to get displaced by Ngakia, initially through injuries and then by the latter’s admitted form, but I think we’ve ended up with the better player.
I say “what we have to assume is his more natural and familiar position” knowing full well that it is, obviously.
He wasn't consistent, but had some great performances there as well. Best player on the pitch in that cup game we lost to ManU. He sure had bad games there, but I think people don't give him enough credit for at least a few of his performances at the left last season.
As a side note, I don't think Coufal is a very good reference imo. He played there for like 10 minutes, crossed the ball when he was supposed to and that was it, he's not a dribbler in general and there was no defending for him to do. And more importantly, I assume Johnson was being prepared for the left in training, unlike Coufal.
