[1462] The Kookaburra's Mate

Short-Fiction

G’day my lovelies.

The Kookaburra’s Mate

It’s been almost a year since I wrote this. Despite its loose success at writing competitions, I still feel very much dissatisfied with The Kookaburra’s Mate. I feel as if I have significantly improved as a writer in the last year and want to touch up this story to bring it into line with my expectations. I was only really starting writing when I first wrote this. I rewrote it the other day, but found myself very much re-treading the same decisions I made when I originally composed it. I lack guidance, feel incapable of refurbishing something decent without guidance from a critical audience. Chief among my quibbles with this piece is the prose: it bothers me. I’m not entirely sure why. Maybe you could tell me?

For a non-Australian audience: this is a Laughing Kookaburra. Wonderful birds. I also recommend listening to their laugh, because they really do laugh. Hope that helps your imagination grasp the scene. I recommend you look at these links if you’re unfamiliar with Australian fauna, because otherwise you’re missing out on 1) understanding the scene and 2) seeing a cool as fuck bird.

Comments of any sort are greatly appreciated. I feel as if I am a very different creative than I was when this was written, and am viewing it with a new set of eyes. Despite this, I could not make the changes I wanted, so feel as if external advice is necessary to break the seal on my new input.

Hope you’re all well. More Pickled coming, for those who’re interested. It promises to be a debaucherous chapter, and I’m going back to work soon so will have plenty of sordid stories to contribute to it…
