Pretty sure it's possible to play every gen except for 8 on the 3ds, 8 is a switch exclusive.
Just realized giving you the full list may help.
Gen 1 and 2 are digital downloads (edit: gen 2 can also be gotten as the remakes "heart gold/soul silver")
Gen 3 is only available as the remakes "omega ruby/alpha sapphire"
Gen 4 is "diamond/pearl/platinum" regular ds games but works on 3ds, also remakes are coming to switch soon
Gen 5 is "black/white and black2/white2" 2 is a direct sequel which we dont see often for pokemon games.
Gen 6 is "x/y"
Gen 7 is "sun/moon/ultra sun/ultra moon" ultra versions are usually seen as better
Gen 8 is "sword/shield" and is only on switch.
Thanks very much for breaking this all down for me, it’s all very clear and straightforward - much more so than I was expecting. Really looking forward to getting back into the series.
Or 3 but yeah, 3ds is king here
There is oras, but I guess that's more a gen 6.3.
Yeah i just mean you can't play emerald, or fire red if you want
