Doesn't Dune have a runtime of 2h 35m? It looks like that timeline has 3.5+ hours of video.

Start Timecode is 01:00:00:00. But on the left side you can see the correct runtime

Ah I see; is it typical to have a non-zero starting timecode?

elibrooOP•

Yes it is standard to put the first frame of your movie at 01:00:00 and the timeline starts for example hat 00:59:30:00 with a 2 frame sync beep 2 seconds before start at 00:59:58 but this depends on the editor.. sometimes the first frame is at 10:00:00 and the Timeline starts at 09:59:00

That makes sense. Thanks for the info!

Nice work.

Yes. Each reel of the movie will have it's own hour starting TC, so Reel 1 will be 01:00:00:00, Reel 2 02:00:00:00 etc

Who decides how long each reel is? And how many reels?

Awesome! Were you an assistant on Dune?

No, but there is a Great article + interview with the editor joe Walker on frame.io https://blog.frame.io/2021/10/27/art-of-the-cut-dune-joe-walker/?utm_medium=orgsoc&utm_source=linkedin&utm_campaign=AOTC_Dune

This is super cool, thanks for sharing!

I’m starting to think they’ll never be a movie timeline with less audio tracks than video tracks lol

1920 x 1080? I thought it was finished at higher resolution than that.

You won‘t finish a 165m $ movie in your NLE. This is an offline edit with 1920x1080 proxies

What about $164m?

It meant that a high budget movie isn't exported from your avid. Basically, the lab does proxy for you, the editor edits in HD, and once the edit Is locked, the footage is conformed (I'm sorry I'm not sure about the English word here) for grading and the rest of post-production. You don't simply export your movie by yourself. The lab does it for you. It's a very different workflow from what you mostly see on YouTube. You gotta conform your edit, then the VFX etc.

Anyway, to summarize: the movie is finished in a lab after the edit is locked.

yeah, conform is the proper term.
