Icebreaker makes merino wool tan toques and sells them to us cheaper with the pro deal they offer.
The catch is you lose that sick dead bird drip.
The issued tuque is one of the few pieces of issue kit I objectively like. It's warm, easy to clean, can wear it under a helmet and dries reasonably quickly.
It's not the item of pure majestic glory that is the bivvy bag, but it certainly ranks alongside the ranger blanket and the arctic socks for "well, this is surprisingly not shit"

What's the worst piece of gear (in your opinion) that Army members / infantry have to use?
That's a tough one, as there isn't a single objective metric for "worst."
If I had to choose it'd be the tacvest. While some stuff is more useless (the 1950s issued flashlight, for instance) the tacvest is terrible, quite often forced to use (many units don't let you use purchased replacements), and directly connected to an individuals sustained combat effectiveness.
To break that piece of junk down:
- Only carries 4 mags, even though standard frontline load is supposed to be twice that
- Has a zipper needed to hold it on, which jams up in ice, mud, dirty and general wear and tear
- The grenade pouches are too small to fit a grenade (you can force it, but then it's damned near impossible to take them out)
- it's not modular, aside from swapping a canteen pouch for a slightly larger canteen pouch
- The mag pouches sit too high to easily draw/replace them while handling a weapon
- The bayonet holder is specifically placed to smack your jaw when going prone
- Has no option for pistol magazines or more than one box for the C9
- Has no pouch which can fit any radio components
- Has so many supplementary small pouches, and otherwise extra materiel it's actually needlessly heavy for how little utility it provides
I'm sure I could spend an hour thinking about other smaller faults with it, but that's my summary of its deficiencies.
Also, I was purely considering personal kit - for overall "gear," it's hard to be worse than the "and suddenly I'm on fire" LSVW.
You talking about the itchy, thick, wool rag? Or have they started issuing the soft fleece-bois lately?
[removed]
More comfortable under a helmet, sure... but the Arc'Teryx RHO LTW Beanie is certainly not warmer than a thin fleece toque.
Just keep making the same mistake...
Tuque versus toque
Tuque: Tuque is the preferred Canadian spelling of the knitted cap worn in winter.
“They ran so hard across the snowy field their faces were as red as their tuques.”
The term tuque is French Canadian. Some etymologists think it probably comes from an Old Spanish word (toca) for a type of headdress — specifically, a soft, close-fitting cap worn about 500 years ago.
Toque: Toque is the spelling we use for some other types of headwear. But these are rarely mentioned in news stories.
Toques include conical or plumed hats from previous centuries, the tall white crowns worn by chefs, and modern snug hats that fall into the rather vague category of high-fashion.
I've never seen it spelled with a u
Honestly commonly spelled tuque here in qc, never seen it spelled "toque" myself
You're welcome then
CAF Combat arms in this current climate = taking an 'L' i.e. bored out of their minds.
If your not dropping thousands of dollars on tacticool gear are you even combat arms?
