How to stop a mass crush at a concert. Rage Against the Machine front man, Zack de la Rocha, pauses the show at Lolla to tell everyone to take 10 steps back.

I have had to say this a few times already, guys like these with big mosh pits were used to having crowd surges so they were on the ball, pop bands ect were not, "metalheads" know going to the front can get messy so everyone looks after each other, you can have a family with kids being shielded next to a group beating the crap out of each other slamming. This doesn't happen in more mainstream pop gigs which is why there has been alot of crush situations.
No excuses. Scott has been ignoring safety completely for at least a few years at his shows. He encouraged dangerous shit like jumping safety barriers and many kids have already been injured. Now 8 people are dead and one is a kid. Someone is going to be held accountable for that.
Yes and killing in the name of got banned from some rock clubs where I am because the dancefloor got so violent, other bands have done the same, the difference being the security expected it so adapted. Any pit crew expects invasions thats par for the course.

I don't know if he will be the one facing legal action or the organizers but someone is going to have to answer for this. One of them was 14 years old and that isn't just some tragedy it's criminal negligence.
Live Nation doesn't give a shit about anyone as long as they get their money.
As someone who has been to many Live Nation events
Can confirm. Been to tons of ska/punk shows where if you trip at all at the front there's like 4 people helping you up,
But that time I was at a Florida Georgia Line concert a girl got fucking knocked unconscious by some people jumping around and hitting her in the head, and the people looked around at us annoyed because we had the audacity to care enough and get her into a clear spot.
They should have been happy you were getting that annoying unsightly Debbie Downer out of the way

Yeah no. At the really, really big concerts there are masses of injuries at mosh pits
Not the same as being crushed to death, you enter a mosh pit and take part, thats on you, outside that area or not taking part you get left alone.
There are studies on metal and other similar music going back to the 70s when moshing first started both on the self regulation but also on peoples willingness to help , the pearl jam deaths were caused by a crowd surge not by moshing, totally disgusting for you to suggest that. Mosh pits actually help prevent crowd crushes as they give, unlike when people are packed solid.
ITS SO FUCKIN EASY TO SAVE SOMEONE’S LIFE FROM THE STAGE IN THESE SITUATIONS LIKE WTF WAS SCOTT THINKING WHEN HE WAS PERFORMING ok I’ll stop yelling… but Jesus fucking Christ…
Was at the Rage 'reunion' show at Coachella. I had seen them many times before and know what their shows are like. I was with two cousins that even went back in the crowd before they came out to avoid the crush. Even though they had one of those center barrier things to keep it minimal, once Tesify started, the wave of movement and crushing pushing from the back was picking people off their feet and you couldn't get your foot down in front of you. You just had to try to stay upright until the wave moved back again. A lot of people got sucked under. I heard a scream to my right and saw a girl like a movie getting sucked under. I just grabbed whoever's shoulder to my left and tried to bend down sideways enough to get an arm around her. She reached up and grabbed my neck and I was barely able to get her on her feet. I think she yelled "thank you"lol so, I just pointed to the center barrier about 15 feet away and yelled "go that way and over the barrier". As soon as she could move, she pushed her way in that direction.
At the first Coachella Rage played another cousin of mine got trampled pretty good while I was having fun in the pit but, many shows I wanted to get up close and almost couldn't move for half the show. The best thing to do is to stay calm and not panic. If you can, get someone bigger to help and ask to get lifted up and crowd surf to the front over the barrier. Rage shows are crazy but everyone usually looks out for each other.
15 feet is 5.44 UCS lego Millenium Falcons
Good bot
Thank you :)
I was there and the crowd got really fucking nuts. He stopped the show multiple times to tell people to help each other out. Great show and a great frontman.

Rage against the machine did fight the machine in celebrity death match, look it up on youtube, great watch!
lol that show was fuckin nuts every time
part of history :D
And now they are the machine
I was at a festival where everything was going well and there was plenty of room . The second 21 pilots got on stage , their fans rushed everyone from behind forcing everyone forward. It was so packed I couldn’t lift my arms . Then the lady in front of me then elbowed be in the gut as hard as she could , because I was “in her personal bubble” . As I was yelling at her to look around you dumb bitch no one has any personal space , a 21 pilots fan started just wacking the back of everyone head in front of her , mine included, because she just had to move her arm up and down to the beat of the music. After being yelled at by multiple people to fucking stop it took someone shoving her to get the message.
Forever turned me off their music .
I was at this show, a little in front of the sound booth. I remember they were constantly pulling people out of the crowd the entire show. RATM did the right thing by having everyone move back. Nobody goes to a show only to leave in an ambulance.
I saw them in New York in 2008 and right when they came on stage the crowd surged to the front. I was caught against the fence and had to get pulled out as I was being crushed
I was at this show. Right before Rage went on, crowds rushed the fences to the right from the street and dozens (maybe more then a hundred) poured in from the outside. I wasn't in the middle mosh pit, I was stage right slightly on a hill watching the crowd like a wave just pushing and pushing. Was crazy.
I never got to see Rage. Not once.
This was the first show I thought of when I saw the video that show Travis Scott continue signing. Been to a lot of festivals, in a lot of bad situations like this one at Lolla, never anything like Astrofest. Even Knotfest this year was bad, but not THAT bad.

I was at that show, but we stayed quite a bit back. I do remember hearing that someone got a broken leg up front. It was a good show.

So how long until the sub comes back to normal and you wankers stop posting random bleeding heart shit concert posts?
What if you could hear a guy screaming back the lyrics "Fuck you! I wont do what you tell me!" And gets his section of the crowd to push and mosh even harder as the music starts up. The camera pans over to the man yelling back at Zack and its a young Travis Scott. Pans back over to Zack and he is sucking his thumb and peeing himself. Im just asking what if.
Edit: Guys, you cant be mad at me for being inquisitive.
They describe Che Guevara as the 5th member of their band. Guevara wanted to nuke the USA, saying millions dead would be a price worth paying, and openly hated the USSR for not doing it. RATM are no better than Nazis.
This move literally saved my life. I was a scrawny teenager at the front of the show and it was getting to the point where I could not breath with the amount of people crushing us from behind.
This wasn't the only time he had to do this, there were two other times he paused the show and seriously threatened cancelling the headline event of the festival if EVERYONE didn't try to move back.
Honestly though, I find it wild that Travis Scott fans are less tame than RATM ones. I always thought a lot of Travis' music to be laidback and moody which is the direct opposite of the high octane energy of RATM
The difference being Travis Scott’s fans are just there for something to post on the gram. RATM actually stands for comradeship.
I've always enjoyed both of their music, two sides of a coin honestly. RATM was definitely was more politically significant, I wholly agree. Travis Scott concerts are usually known for their extreme visual effects, violent moshpits and synthwork (usually courtesy of Mike Dean), so it isn't only for the gram. And Travis isn't the best live artist on his own, his vocal processing tools work great in the studio but I think they aren't too good on the ears live, whereas Zack De La Rocha had a good pair of lungs every time, he's more of a live vocalist than a rapper that uses autotune (this isn't biased, like I said I enjoy both of their music a lot). If you look at those hooligans fighting it out in the crowds, they don't seem like the type of dudes to throw everything onto the internet.
But your right, despite being more hardcore musically, RATM fans are more tame. As a hip-hop fan myself I have to say that we need to take a few cards from rock and metal fans, who surprisingly have the decency to wait in lines and help the injured better, because this could've been easily avoided.
You nailed the main difference right there at the end of your post. The a lot of hip-hop fans, especially the younger ones, probably don't have much experience when it comes to the code of conduct in things like mosh pits, or extremely rowdy crowds; something that has been part of the rock and metal world for decades.
Yeah thats why its Paul Ryans favorite band.
Bro please don’t compare that fucking donkey to rage against the machine in any way. Fucking shit auto tune crap mass produced for the mindless fucking idiots of today
No one compared them, I can't compare them because they're in two different zones of music. "Fucking shit auto tune crap mass produced for the mindless fucking idiots of today"
First off, it's my opinion. I'm entitled to liking both musically if I wanted to. Second, they aren't too far off in terms of acclaim. If you look up RYM, The Battle Of Los Angeles has a 3.65 and Rodeo has a 3.77. Thinking older music is objectively better makes no sense, if you actually enjoyed music for music you wouldn't pan something because it's not your cup of tea. But not anymore really, fuck Travis for his irresponsibility
You had me up until this part, you're really comparing these artists based on ratings from RYM? Rodeo has 7K more votes...guessing this site and his fans obviously skew younger and I don't think it's indicative of acclaim...
The Battle of Los Angeles was ranked number 426 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time...Travis Scott has 0 albums on that list. Pitchfork gave RATM an 8.7 and Rodeo a 6.0...
Rage fans rage at injustice. Scoot fans are sn injustice.
i agree, travis' fanbase is way more rogue. But I'm pretty sure no one deserved to pass away, and a lot of people caught up in it were innocent teenagers. They probably wanted to see their favorite rapper live, there's nothing wrong in that.
I was also in the front for this show and it was the only time I have ever felt panic at a concert. Being crushed like that with nowhere to go is a horrible feeling, I’ll never forget it. That was the second time I had seen Rage and they actually stopped their show when I saw them the first time as well. It was at The Gorge in ‘97 and a girl had her shirt ripped while crowd surfing. Zach literally shut it down and talked about sexual assault. He said if he saw anyone being mistreated at the show again that they would walk. I fucking love Rage and cannot wait to see them again next year.
They are aggressively delightful 😁
ZdlR is one of the sweetest people I’ve ever had the fortune of meeting.
So fucking cool and smart, I'm jealous of you heh
That’s amazing. I’ve been sitting on my ticket for 2 years. Excited about their return.
I was almost exactly opposite from where this video was shot and I was seeing people being pulled out of the front. They all were still alive but had been being crushed.
I saw Tool at the Salem Armory in 1995 and Maynard had to stop the show after the first song and get everyone to step back because they were pushing the barrier forward.
I was about 20 rows back alone, needed to crowd surf out and I tell people all the time about this show. Really appreciate their awareness
