The pelicans' allowed shot profile has been much improved this season

Stats

Last year, the Pelicans defense had the 22nd expected eFG% based on shot location according to Cleaning The Glass, and were 13th in terms of how many shots at the rim they allowed. This year, they're up to 3rd in expected eFG% and 3rd in percentage of shots allowed at the rim. Even though they're letting opponents shoot too well overall, they've done a great job making sure they have to shoot from the toughest areas on the court.

Yeah, right now teams are shooting 39% against the Pels on above the break 3’s. That probably won’t continue.

Giving up 70% at the rim is tough though. Jonas is at 70% dfg% at the rim after being in the mid 50’s for most of his career. Probably worth digging into what’s up with that.

Opponent free throw rate and turnover rate also bottom 6/7.

Honestly a lot of it is probably just getting used to a new system and new players. Defense more than offence is something that improves with players just having time together and the scheme. I'd look to see how his second half of the season stats look.

Great info, thanks for posting.

Obviously they've been going with defense-heavy lineups with Zion and Ingram out.

Another factor is that Jaxson Hayes is playing good defense this year. His defensive FG% allowed is terrific, among the best in the league so far this season. Opponents aren't scoring much at the rim when he's on the floor.
