I've come to the conclusion that WotC does not play their product and if they do, they only care about their favorite format.

Discussion

Who's brain child was it to inject a hybrid mana one drop that gains +1/+1 counters every time an artifact or creature is sacrificed? When sac'ing creatures and artifacts is already the BEST deck's MO?! They didnt need it! And all it did was make their deck more consistent because now they can just drop red mana all together! On top of that, they print Deadly Dispute! The deck didnt need any more help!!!

They thought Brain Storm and Memory Lapse would be okay!!! C'mon now!!!! And it doesnt even stop Jeskai or Izzet with them being banned!! Expressive Iteration.... Who ever makes these decisions either doesnt play all formats or doesnt care or just wants to see their favorite decks thrive. The one drop squirrel was not needed in a meta where Trail of Crumbs, Cat-Oven already existed. Did some braindead think that a squirrel deck would emerge and they completely forgot Trail of Crumbs and Cat-oven?!?! hIsToiC Is aN OpEN aNd DiVerSe foRMat!!! A format is only diverse when the players treat it as such but keep printing the best deck more tools and we'll keep huffing that copium.

salty post boys, nothing new here

Yes there is a bit of salt but it's more of why would WotC do this? The only people thinking this card is okay are the ones dropping red from their Jund Food lists. It has more applications but it literally only fits into one meta list.

And further more, why cant we have discussions like this? This squirrel was hand chosen months ago by some one who thought it was great for Historic. Open up other archetypes, for fucks sake, why inject cards to make the best deck better?

go_sparks25•

That card was not made with historic in mind. It was printed for modern/commander which have a much higher power ceiling than histroic.

11
EvaUnit007OP•

I'm sure it does. But is Cat-Oven Trail of Crumbs dominating Modern?

-6

It’s not even a thing in modern. Someone tried to make it work with Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar, but I guess it failed.

Is that card really so busted in historic? There’s a lot of control/combo and cheap removal, how is this squirrel even a problem?

3
go_sparks25•

It’s not so much this card being busted as it is the cat /oven/trail of crumbs combo from Eldraine being busted. That combo along with mayhem devil completely kills small creature based decks and was part of the reason why cat oven was banned along with 3feri. The squirrel is just a strong addition to an already strong engine.

2

It’s a synergistic piece, but it also require a set up and has no self protection or evasion.

Makes for a good target for all the fatal pushes you’re not throwing at the cat. It’s a good card for the deck, not gonna debate on that, but nothing more.

EvaUnit007OP•

I dont know if it's busted but it feels overwhelming some times. It's not a turn one play. But removal means nothing when you can Oven the target. I have to play removal for an enchantment, artifact and creature and a feelsbadman graveyard hate. What makes the squirrel bust is that this deck doesnt need Korvald or Mayhem Devil any more. It's just a one drop that can be cast mid-late game that goes from a 1/1 to an 8/8 if your red deck didnt play a Fatal Push in a single turn lol.

You should try Bo3 instead of running every kind of removal in the main deck. Speaking for myself going from Bo1 to Bo3 improved the experience a lot. This way you could run more focused hate cards after sideboarding instead of diluting your list.

Historic is diverse at the moment, even in Platinum.

I have 4 competitive "meta" decks build. Working towards a fifth one. And everytime I play, yes, I see meta decks and the occasional weird jank, but it rarely gets to a point of only seeing the same deck everytime. And if it does, the winrates always balances to a midpoint.

Were there salty loses sometimes? Of course, but only because of my draw was bad/their draw was good moments. Examples:
- Playing MonoWhite Humans, I lost to a [[Mizzix's Mastery]] Combo because I was mana-screwed and couldn't get a second white source for my [[Ranger-Captain of Eos]] to hit the board the turn before Mizzix's was played, and I had full knowledge of it going to be played. (Thalia also could have worked as a topdeck that turn).
- Again with MonoWhite Humans, I lost to a [[Blood Artist]] sacrifice deck only because my opponent drew their third Blood Artist. I was handling two without issues, but the third one was death sentence.
- Also with MonoWhite Humans... I've played against your nemesis deck, Cat-Oven Sacrifice, sometimes, and the only time they've won against me was a time they had set up the combo on turn 2, with a second Oven and later they drew the third one just the turn before Korvold hit the board. If it wasn't for that, I would have outdamaged them.

Yes, Mono-White gained a lot of love. They got Esper Sentinal, Thalia LT, etc to make Humans something when it was almost nothing. But all they, WotC, did was shift an already established GW deck in a different direction and for the better, a deck that needed love. GB/GBR didnt need anything to help them, it was a fine deck with out the squirrel. Do not tell me that a new deck that received card injections from the same set that injected a card to make an already "best deck" better is better. THIS IS WHAT I WANT! A NEW DECK WAS MADE COMPETITIVE, OMG!

I agree that historic is busted, but your choice of card to demonstrate your point is so laughably mediocre that it completely kills your credibility.

2
EvaUnit007OP•

hm? You dont think ravenous squirrel is a card to take seriously? It changed a tiered deck to drop a color entirely. I mean, with out Meathook, probably not but, yeesh. I'm playing the Golgari list for the first time tonight and it feels like a beast.

EDIT: I groomed a 24/24 squirrel tonight... I'm going back to splashing red for fling!!! (No, I'm not serious... lol)

No friend of squirrels ?

1
EvaUnit007OP•

I am a friend! He's a fine card! But not in a format where it's been dominated by sac'ing all the things he needs to grow. This mamma jamma goes from 1 to 100 at instant speed!!! He didnt make the format more fun, it just propelled the best deck to stay the best deck. And it's an uncommon.

2
Next_Studio2172•

Yeah, I really don't think it's that busted. Everything I have heard is Izzet is the best deck.

1
EvaUnit007OP•

I dont remember saying that the Golgari or Jund sac lists were THE best, I thought I chose my words carefully and said it was ONE of the best. If I didnt, I misspoke and I apologize.

PW_Domination•

Oh dear... I never see those decks Plat4 upwards. It's not that strong. Just get more removal and you're fine

0†
EvaUnit007OP•

And that's matchmaking, power level matching working for you. I'm in plat. I've played against it tonight 4 times. I dont hate the deck, I'm gonna run it tomorrow to be honest, I just hate WotC's decisions to give the best deck more tools. Ladder is a ladder, I'm unlucky while you are not, I guess.

1
PW_Domination•

Maybe. A lot of those decks don't run artefact removal. [[Grafdigger's Cage]] in the sideboard can help a lot against the cat shenanigans. What's your main deck for historic ladder?

actually most of those decks run ways to answer cage in the main deck, jund and gb food do great in mythic.

People think that, but no.

Honestly when I play Jund food/golgari Lurrus, I don't really care if you have cage. I'm resurrecting the cat to draw cards off of [[trail of crumbs]] or for mayhem devil pings, the drain life effect is just a bit of a bonus. Sometimes, the cat not returning means I can keep attempting to do it, sacrificing more food and drawing more cards than I otherwise would have been able to. I rarely lose a game because of cage.

The only thing Jund has to fear really are continuous exile effects like [[rest in piece]] or [[leyline of the void]]. And even those can be dealt with fairly easily since you should have removal for them.

Main deck or playing for fun? I play a mutlitude of decks, I've been here since closed beta. What I play when I get frustrated or need/want to climb is 5-c Niv, because value is fun and back breaking. I'm working on a Jund dredge/escape deck with Geist but it's never going to get there when sac just out grinds it. And I always hate it when people bring up Cage, RIP, Yasharn against Jund/Golgari sac.... THEY PLAY ENOUGH BINDING OF THE OLD GODS and such TO OUT GRIND YOU. Those cards are just bandaids while you hope to slam cards and survive. They dont have to recur cats to win, they just need to beable to sac.

PW_Domination•

Calm dude, can I see your decklist of the 5c Niv?

2
stroggoii•

MH2 destroyed every competitive format it touched.

And that's why Pioneer is the only non-rotating format worth playing seriously anymore.

Larkhainan•

Unless things have changed it's a known fact R&D is understaffed and pushed to produce tons and tons of product that further punishes that. I really don't know how they'd have time to work on historic beyond tossing out a few bans.
