Horrible, horrible lag

VEGAS 14-18 ► UNRESOLVED
  1. Vegas 18 Pro
  2. Ryzen 7 3700x, RTX 2060 Super, 16GB DDR4 RAM
  3. Windows 10
  4. No, not pirated

I see other people complaining about preview lag but mine is just laggy in general. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, installing to a different drive, but it's still the same. It's super laggy. The UI freezes up constantly. Preview lag is extreme -- will stutter playing back a simple GIF on the lowest preview quality. My CPU usage and RAM usage are both low, but during lag "Power usage" for the program rises to very high. So much as moving the ticker across the video causes lag and a power usage spike. It's borderline unusable and I don't think it's the hardware as my PC is otherwise snappy and responsive but this is like it's running on a Windows XP Pentium 4 machine from 2007.

I assume you are on 18.527? If not, update.

For lag usually it's an unhappy combination of media, GPU and settings. What media are you generally using? Please be specific.

If you want to try resetting the program and clearing the cache it can help sometimes.

For your GPU go to help/driver update and get the latest NVIDIA Studio driver if you aren't using it already.

For preferences/ file io, restore it to defaults. If the media you are using doesn't like NVIDIA decoding you can set decoder to off but that will reduce performance for types of videos that the NVIDIA does support well.

Yes, 18.527. I tried resetting the program and it only slightly improved lag. It still lags badly even with no media, and I've only used GIFs thus far (I'm new to video editing).

I upgraded to Vegas 19 and it runs completely fine, so I'll just use that instead.

I know I've had trouble with Vegas handling GIFs in the past, but it works fine for me with the one GIF I tried just now. So it's possible it could vary from GIF to GIF. What I would recommend is start a new project and see how it handles a normal video file and see if the UI is laggy with that.

19 has a number of bug fixes over 18 so glad one of them helps your system.
