Best ways to make use of picture rails
My rented flat doesn't have a lot of storage space, but does have nearly 100% picture rail coverage. And I was considering using them to hang small shelving/storage solutions off them.
At the moment the best things options I've found involves just using over-the-door hanging like this, but am wondering if there are better options (that don't stick out at an angle because doors are deeper than picture rails).
Or any warnings, as well.

Just be aware of how the picture rail is fixed to the wall….I am renovating a Victorian house which we have apropos back to joist and brick. I have put it back in keeping with the period coving picture rail etc…..but….I haven’t screwed the picture rail on, I have used gripfil, they will hold a photo frame /small painting etc, but no sure about anything else……
It's a '50s council flat. Whether it's been reattached I can't tell, though a basic "nudge" makes it feel solidly secured.
If it’s original, it will be nailed to the wall….the original I took out had nails into wooden wedges in the brick work. But still be aware…if the wedges have shrunk etc it might not hold a lot of weight. We also took some out of our old house which was ex- council, this was attached the same from memory.
