2014 "Auction Kill-Off": GRRM is writing 2 fans into TWOW to be killed off (Spoilers Extended)
Back in 2014, GRRM sold off the chance for 2 fans to be created as characters (and subsequently killed) in TWOW, in return for a donation to the local New Mexico Wolf Sanctuary he helps fund. In this post I thought it would be fun to look at what we know about situation and see if we can make any guesses.
From 2014: Two fans will be written in as characters and killed off in TWOW
Background
Rolling Stone article: Announcement and Winner Details
In exchange for a $20,000 donation, Martin will name two characters (one male, one female) after the charitable readers, allowing them to choose their “character’s station in the world (lording, knight, peasant, whore, lady, maester, septon, anything)” with the coveted narrative destination of a “grisly death.”
The two spots were picked up rather quickly:
the two contest spots were nabbed within hours, with eight others added to a waiting list in hopes of an epic slaying.
One of the Winners was named:
One of the fans awaiting demise is Facebook employee Dave Goldblatt, who claims to have made his $20,000 decision in 10 minutes. “I’m fortunate enough to be in a position to do this cool thing, and it’s going toward a good cause,” he says. “I don’t think I’m doing anything extraordinary.” (Pause to think about how Martin is going to make “Dave Goldblatt” sound Game of Thrones-y. Lord Goldblatt of Davendorf?)
and he mentioned what he would want from a death standpoint:
In addition to naming the characters after the donors, Martin is also allowing them to choose their “character’s station in the world (lording, knight, peasant, whore, lady, maester, septon, anything).” Goldblatt says he is eyeing a “Valyrian if at all possible,” but wants Martin to decide. “I wouldn’t want to impinge upon his creative process,” he says.
Previous Example
GRRM has made numerous odes to friends and homages to other works (Lovecraftian, Sesame Street, Wheel of Time and numerous NFL references).
One of my favorites is the example of Wun Wun and Ser Patrek of King's Mountain. For those of you who don't know, Wun Wun (a giant) savagely slays Ser Patrek. This is noted as Wun Wun (an homage to the New York Giants great Phil Simms who wore #11 or one-one) and Ser Patrek's attire is based on that of the Dallas Cowboys (a rival of the Giants).
Here is GRRM describing the bet that made him include the above:
SAGAL: Isn't it true that there's a character in your latest book that's there because you lost a bet about a football game?
MARTIN: Yes, in a way, yes, it is. That's true. ... Well there's this guy named Patrick St. Denis, who runs a fantasy website called Pat's Fantasy Hotlist. And Pat is a big Dallas Cowboys fan. So we would have a standing bet for a number of years about whether the Dallas Cowboys or the New York Giants would do better.
And I won the bet the first two years. But finally, in the third year the Cowboys finished ahead of the Giants. And what I had to do if he won the bet was to kill him horribly within the books.
So I invented a character called Ser Patrek of King's Mountain and described his heraldry as looking somewhat like the heraldry of the Dallas Cowboys with the silver star on a white field. And then I had him ripped apart by a giant.
It should also be noted that Patrek St. Denis is from Montreal (literally King's Mountain).
Upcoming
Now this is all speculation and we have such little information to go off:
Martin is also allowing them to choose their “character’s station in the world (lording, knight, peasant, whore, lady, maester, septon, anything).” Goldblatt says he is eyeing a “Valyrian if at all possible,” but wants Martin to decide. “I wouldn’t want to impinge upon his creative process,” he says
So if we follow the logic that GRRM let's him choose (bc we wouldn't anything to talk about otherwise as the alternative is too broad). How Does GRRM weave another Valyrian character into the story and kill them off?
Potential Options
Awhile back I made a list of characters currently alive with Valyrian blood if you are interested: The Blood of Old Valyria Part I: List of Current Characters
I will also note it seems like this character is supposed to be alive currently and not be a historic death, but I could be wrong.
- Targaryen
I truly doubt GRRM brings another Targ into the story and since I don't expect this character to die off page, I don't think he is the missing link between Aerion's son Maegor, etc.
- Blackfyre
Similar to Targaryen bringing another Blackfyre in doesn't make much sense. That said maybe he is some distant cousin in the Golden Company, etc.
- Local Lesser Valyrian House
Its possible that GRRM writes him in as a member (or bastard) of House Celtigar or Velaryon. The only member of House Celtigar currently alive is Lord Ardrian Celtigar so it would be pretty easy for GRRM to expand on this house. House Velaryon is a bit more fleshed out but we really only know the current lord/heir and then Aurane Waters. So its possible GRRM could insert him here as well
- Free Cities
Not even taking into account the Blackfyre history with Tyrosh, the blood of Valyria runs strong in a few of the free cities, particularly Lys and Volantis:
One was old and one was young and one had lost an ear, but all three had the white-blond hair and smooth fair skin of Lys, where the blood of the old Freehold still ran strong. -ADWD, The Blind Girl
and:
Tall and willowy, with the silver-gold hair and purple eyes of Valyria (for the blood still runs strong in Lys), she was seven years Viserys's elder.
Death?
I have no clue tbh, but if we use GRRM's previous logic (having a rival of the Giants ripped apart by a giant), it might be interesting to have this new "valyrian" character die via dragonflame. Perhaps this character dies via some type of "sowing" (looking for new dragonriders) or the upcoming Dance of the Dragons II is burned by one of them.
As I mentioned before its quite possible that GRRM does not make him valyrian.
UPDATE
From u/zionius (honestly the extensive SSM Search is an amazing tool, especially with BFish leaving us alone and afraid)
Though he believes he could have raised more money for the charities by including more in-book deaths, Martin decided to draw the line at three so it wouldn't get intrusive to book readers. He's currently in contact with each of the winners, figuring out how to discreetly work them into the plot. "We're going back and forth, I've started emailing them," Martin tells me. "I'm still in the middle of the book, so it'll be some time before I write the scenes in which they die." The winners include Facebook's Dave Goldblatt, Dr. Dave Cotton of Michigan and a woman who has chosen to remain anonymous. Prizeo co-founder Leo Seigal reveals that the woman plans to name her in-book character after her company as a surprise to her coworkers. "One of the winners wrote me and said, 'You can kill me however you want, just don't do anything to my penis,' " said Martin, laughing. "So no castrating him first and stuffing his penis in his mouth or anything like that, I suppose."
TLDR: In 2014 GRRM raised money for charity by allowing 2 fans the right to be written into the series and choose their station/be killed off. Using that information I presented a few options for the character's "house" or life and how GRRM could kill them.
