Having issues running the game after a few hours

Hello reddit, I was hoping you guys could help me with a technical issue. I bought Fallout New Vegas a little while ago, played it for a few hours (2-3 sessions) then tried to load it again. It got stuck in the loading screen, I left it for about ten minutes and it just never loaded the game. I tried hitting continue and load (different times) and neither worked. Every time, the little load icon keeps spinning but eventually the cursor stops responding and I couldn't even tab out (had to restart my computer each time). I left the game alone for a week or two, came back to it, started a new game, and the same thing happened after about 3-4 hours of playtime (again, 2-3 sessions). Not really sure what to do about it, do you guys have any advice? I don't think it's a lack of technical capacity, my computer can run much more processor-intensive games just fine. I am running windows 10, but I'm not sure if that's relevant (I figured if FNV didn't work with my OS then the game wouldn't run in the first place). I also bought the game on Steam, am not using any DLC or mods. It's my first time playing and I was really excited to play this game, any help would be appreciated, thank you in advance.

Follow Viva New Vegas, stop before Visuals. DLC is important for it, as the vast majority of people have all DLCs. Vanilla is buggy as hell.

I would double check that you have those older redist packages, though I was under the impression that Steam was supposed to do that automatically? Could be wrong.

If it's an unmodded game from Steam and you have a decent computer, it has to be a compatibility problem somewhere. Also, consider capping your FPS if you do have a decent computer either through the GPU system or you can download a game specific tool to do so.

I think you should def work on getting vanilla fnv running correctly first, but it MIGHT help to do the intro to Qolore's modding guide for essential things like 4gb patcher and NVSE with all its plugins that do minor engine fixes. NVAC tick fix etc. All the utilities and tweaks are gonna iron out the vanilla game and make it easier to focus on computer specific issues.

Okay I’m going to be totally honest: I am not very good with computers. How do I check that?

TMK, steam should auto install those before the game. And if you go into your downloads you will see that before the game DLs. Though, if you've already installed it maybe it won't show that. Redists likely stay on your computer even if you uninstall FNV. So, technically, one method is to simply re-install FNV thru Steam.

But Qolore goes over the FNV reqs here, including the redists, so consider manually installing them: https://vivanewvegas.github.io/intro.html (and of course check gpu driver updates tho that should be less an issue for these older games)
