I'm new. Give me some of the basics as to what Alchemy is/how it is performed?

I'm already open to the world of Magick, spirituality, Etheral beings etc. (Also relatively new there as well). So, that is Alchemy, aside from the Dark-ages faux science lead-to-gold stuff?
