I would say generally, no country is north of Canada.

Once you hit the north pole (or magnetic north), there is no more north, everything is south.

This has got to be one of the most idiotic and petty things I have seen here recently.

This is one warped spin to the conversation considering the comment that started this in regards to someone attacking was 'look to the north' as in that is the direction the attack would take place from. To which this guy responded 'what country is north of us', intentionally playing dumb, or maybe not with this guy, to pretend the first person was saying a country north of us would attack. When that was clearly not the case. The response to your question, when in the context of the whole conversation and not just the last bit you cropped, was 'what country would be coming at us from the north'.

So it was a matter of taking someone's response out of context, and not linking far enough up the thread for people to see that comment that led to this. Not to mention it is fairly acceptable slang to say that Russia is to our north, just because you are trying to sound smart by being pedantic doesn't mean you are.

There are two countries north of Canada: The USA (South-East Alaska is due north of Haida Gwaii), and Greenland (extending to 74W, Greenland is due north of all four Atlantic provinces and about half of Quebec).

Just an FYI, Greenland's not a country. It's a part of Denmark.

I'd beg to differ. It's an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark.

Well anyone can call themselves an autonomous country, but both the US and the UN do not recognize it as a country. They do recognize places like the Vatican though.

FTFY.

The Alaskan Panhandle is due north of the Queen Charlotte Islands.

And Detroit is north of Windsor.

This proves that you must be a history teacher, this is play #1 when you are facing a student who disagrees with you. Blow something he said way out of proportion to try and embarrass him and show everyone else not to mess with you. My old high school history teacher liked to do that too, he was a vindictive son of a bitch. Too bad this only works when you are a figure of authority and are dealing with teenagers whose self esteem is expressed with negative numbers.

You could not be more wrong. Never make assumptions about anyone on the internet.

Once you hit the North Pole you head south to Russia so it's North-South of us (Canada).

Thank you!

Sure in the same way that everything is North-South or East or West of us..

Exactly.

This just may be the stupidest thread I have ever seen in my entire life on the internet.

He made it pretty clear that what he meant was that once you get to the north pole you go south into Russia which would be in a generally northern direction from us.

This may very well be the single dumbest argument I have seen on r/canada in quite some time.
