Problems with Offset!

I bought a Cricut (Explore Air 2) a few months ago, after wanting one for a long time. I was so excited! But I have never been able to use the offset function. It never adds the layer when I set the options. I’ve seen that this is a known issue, but do any of you smart people know how I might be able to work around it? A lot of what I want to do with it requires it. I’d appreciate any help or insight. The machine is largely just gathering dust, which is a shame, as I saved up after wanting one for so long!
