So I saw a crescent moon yesterday...

It was about 30 mins before sunset, so the sky was like dark blue. Where the rest of the moon should have been (because it was just a very slim part of the moon visible) all I could see was sky, so why does it seem like we can see through the moon when it's not fully lit?
