Defining the relationship?

Background: I am 22. He is 30. We have been together for almost a year now and have much in common. We attend the same university and are studying the same thing, although he is currently working on his masters and I am finishing up my bachelors.

Our relationship has been going wonderfully up until a few days ago. I have met his entire family and even stayed with them in his home town for a good amount of time. He told me I was the first and only girl that he ever did this with. His family adored me and said that I would fit in well with them. He has taken me to two weddings at which we were hinted at as being next (even asked about directly). Any time I have needed something he has always been there. He is extremely supportive, loving, and caring. I couldn't ask for someone better.

Meanwhile, in the back of my mind, I have been curious as to whether or not our relationship has a future. If I apply to the same school for my master's, I will be here for another 3 years with him. If I am accepted elsewhere, I will leave the immediate area and may even end up in another state. This is on the horizon as I will begin applying in the fall. It is something that has been weighing heavily on my mind since I value the relationship.

I expressed the notion of going off to another university in Delaware and he encouraged me to leave and experience new things. I was a bit taken aback, thinking that he would like me to stay, so I inquired about this...

Long story short, the conversation turned into a discussion about how he was happy with where the relationship was at, didn't know what the future had in store, and couldn't tell me if it would last a few more years or not.

This is not where I thought things were going because of how seriously the relationship seemed to be progressing. According to his mother, he was even planning on taking me on a surprise vacation.

We spoke about all of this yesterday on the phone and he told me that if I wasn't happy that we didn't have to stay together. He also told me to think about things for a few days. I haven't made any attempts to contact him and plan on refraining from doing so until I can get a better handle on what's going on.

I have several questions:

  1. Was I delusional for assuming all of these factors made the relationship seem as though it was progressing in a serious fashion?
  2. Why would he do all of these things and tell me something completely different? A suggestion is that he may have cold feet, as he promptly ditched his last ex after 9 months when she wanted him to convert to Judaism.
  3. Assuming he does not want to break up with me, if I were to hypothetically stay with him would he ever change how he feels about me?
  4. Was it wrong of me to ask where things were going in the broader scope of things? I wasn't even necessarily implying marriage. I just wanted to know whether or not we'd still be together.

I'm hoping a guy or a girl with similar experience can explain to me what may or may not be going on. I've already started heavily considering breaking up and have started mentally preparing for that if that is the best course of action.
