how to level up your EAHL character offline? An other stat questions

I've looked thru game menus and googled/searched but I must be missing something obvious....

Just started playing defense, and am pretty good at sweeping fools from the crease, but what stats are the most important to rank up for Defense? Does Def Awareness do anything ?
